Apo_'s review!!!
Specs.
Acer TravelMate 4001 WLMI
Intel Pentium M 715 (1,5GHZ, 400MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache)
15,4" WXGA TFT (Resolution 1280 x 800)
Ati mobility radeon 9700/64 MB
60 GB HDD (4200 rpm)
DVD-DUAL
512 Mb DDR 333mhz
802.11 b/g wireless LAN
This is very quite and powerful machine for its price.
When running battery-mode this thing wont even heat up in your lap
, can get little bit warm though in ac-mode :P
I have tested this with 3dmark '05 and CounterStrike: Source... 3damark was something 540(i will run the test later again)
And in CS:S i got 51.44 FPS average in the video stress test.
In game use this can get bit hot but its very quite, few times only the cooler would turn on.
Okey, keyboard is ok, the round shape is very nice! But i hate those separate € and $ buttons near these arrow keys, they are already in the keyboard but why do they have to put two more?? This i dont get.
Other than that keyboard layout is fine for me.
EDIT: CORRECTION The s-video works fine but there is interference in the background , the rca wont work with the adapter what i got from my with radeon 9800 in my desktop, but i am getting rca-svideo adapter and see will it work then, but i doubt that. Sorry about the confusion
(original)
First thing what i hated about this machine that tv-out not working properly, it will only accept composite cable, not the regural s-video cable, what i normally use for better picture.
I get bit low quality picture at compsite, and the colors can get sometimes bit black and white, i dont like it.
The home edition of the windows sucks, i dont know why they put it in this machine, pro would have been much better idea.
Screen viewing angles are very good and great for watching movies with few friends, the viewing angles can get bit bad when watched about 3 metres away.
Other than that, very great contrast and brightness, in games you can see those dark corners... i have hyundai tft screen and in that i didint see all the dark corners! So i am very glad!.
EDIT: there is actually 3x usb 2.0 ... sandra testing progman was wrong, dont know why it telling wrong info...
(original) I am very dissapointed for that they put 2 USB 1,10 versions and only one usb 2,0 version in this computer, the firewire is too the first versions of it,
But i am very lucky that i dont need that much usb 2.0 because i can put my 250 GB external hd in the firewire slot.
DVD-dual is very good, havent tested yet the burning stage, but i have watched couple films in it and its very quite when waching movies on dvd, but there is some noise still. In normal cdees when installing games can get bit loud but not too loud.
Update: I have now tested burning .avi file to dvd and it works fine!!! And the 4x speed is very fast, dont confuse 4x speed to cdrw-drives speed it is not the same
This is my first notebook, but my brother has had few of them so i got little bit more exprience than this
I would give this laptop in school number 4-10 scale, 7½.
IN SHORT VERSION:
GOOD
- Viewing angles of the screen
- Very silent in gaming... not totally of course
- Good keyboard
- Very nice desing
- Battery time very nice, over 4 hours in movie watching
BAD
- Bad s-video
- Windows XP home edition
- No 5.1 build in soundcard
- Runs bit hot when playing
- Soundblugs in front of the machine, not good at all
- Separate € and $ keys.
- HD has FAT32 not NTFS wich you have to do your self...
- Build in mic sucks, you have to be really close to it to hear enything.
Theres now lots of bad ones, but it is always the easiest job to spot bad ones than good things
