anyone buying HP laptops?

Thread Starter
are these things any good at all? my desktop is a dell and all my work pcs in small business are dell, with good success. but i seem to be able to get some better deals though bestbuy or circuit city, and i don't have to wait!

i don't see any discussion here on HP laptops. certainly, they are a top name, but can thier computers be trusted? BB has a seemingly nice one on sale this week, AMD 64 3200+ with all the bells and whistles for $1550.

thoughts on hp?

HP is good and they have some very nice notebooks... especialy the NC6000. Besides that they definetely do have several others that are real nice.

Also at Best Buy, there's a HP notebook I was looking at for $1299. It's AMD XP-M 3000 512 MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive (4200). Model number is ZV5320 us. Don't know what kind of bells and whistles you need, but it may be one to look at.

My company has issued Compaq's to us throughout the time I have been with them (5 years). I just received my new nc4010. This is one sweet little machine. Fairly pricey but the performance is outstanding. I thought at first that the external DVD/CD drive would bother me but it hasn't in the least. I cannot remember the Compaq models I had prior to this one but they have all been excellent performers.

i just got an HP Pavilian dv1040us. it's one of their newer laptops. i just got it yesterday and so far i'm happy with it.

Their top business line is excellent: nc4010, nc6000, nc8000, and nw8000. Don't know about other models.

The dv1040 us is one I had actually printed out all the info on a week or so ago. I think it's still in my stack that I haven't discarded, so I'd love to hear a full review if/when you're up to it.

well i don't mind writing a review, but i've never done that before so what exactly do i write?
Yikes. I've read several, but it would take someone with actual experience (anyone but me) to tell you that. Or if you're comfortable reading a couple and winging it? Didn't mean to put you on the spot. Just forget I mentioned it if ya' want.
no, that's ok. i would like to review it because i think it's a good laptop and i think some people would like it. yeah i guess i could try to read someone else's, or maybe someone with experience will post some help here
post #12 of 17
Whew. Glad I didn't volunteer you to do something you weren't interested in. That would totally suck.
yeah, don't worry about it. i wouldn't be here if i didn't want to share information with others

Had 3 Compaq in the the last 4 years (Presario 2700, 2800, X1000) and they were all work great. No problem with any of them even to this day (well the battery on the 2700 finally died but that's to be expected).

ok, i'll try to write a review, but if i leave out anything just let me know and i'll do my best to post it.

First off, i'll tell you why i bought this laptop. this is my second laptop, my first was an alienware area-51m. it doesn't have good battery life, it's heavy, it's loud. i'm in my second year of college, and i realized that i needed something that i could take to class with me. the alienware just wasnt' fit to go to class, so i decided i wanted to sell it and get a more mobile laptop.

So i found a computer shop that bought computers, and i took my alienware there. while i was in that town i went to circuit city with my friend that was looking for a really cheap computer. i saw this hp that looked different from any other hp i had seen. after looking at it for awhile and reading what it had in it, i was hooked.

here are the specs:

intel pentium M processor 725 1.6 ghz, 2mb l2 cache, 400mhs FSB
512mb memory
60gb HD
dvd-rw drive
14" high definition widescreen display
hp quickplay system
hp mobile remote control
dual headphone jacks
6-in-1 media card reader
3 usb jacks
i firewire jack
built-in wireless
intergrated extreme graphics

the performance so far with it has been great. i installed all of my stuff on it pretty quickly. it seems very fast so far. it burned a full dvd in just over 15 minutes with nero 6. it seems just as fast as my desktop which has 1gb of ram. so i am very pleased with it so far.

i have had one problem though. i left it on overnight last night and when i woke up i pressed the button to bring it out of standbye. when i went to click my user name it just cut off. that was scary. it does get a little warm, but compared to the alienware it seems like nothing.

i had a little bit of trouble getting the wireless to work today in class, but i finally got it to work with very little problems. i had to repair the connection twice, but after that it worked great.

it seems that the 6-cell battery will last about 3 hours. i'm thinking about maybe getting a 12-cell battery.

the screen is great. i can't believe it's high-definition. i've watched one dvd on it and i could tell a pretty big difference from other screens that i've seen. i'm very pleased with it.

i'm sure the dual headphones will come in handy on trips. the speakers on this laptop sound pretty good. they are louder than i expected, which is good.

sorry if this is a bad review, let me know if i left anything out or whatever.

so far i highly recommend this laptop to anyone who needs mobility but also wants to use it for entertainment as well. this laptop looks great too. even though it's widescreen it's still pretty small and compact, which is what i wanted.

I thought you "done good". 'Course I'm nowhere near an expert. My only question is how much does it weigh? I know I have this somewhere in my stack of stuff, I just haven't been able to find it. Grrrr... I may have accidently pitched it - or the more likely scenario is my 3 year old made off with it.

thanks.
according to specs i saw online, it weighs just over 5 pounds. it seems pretty light to me, so i'm happy with it.
