Notebook Hard Drives & Heat???

I just ordered a notebook, and want to upgrade the hard drive when it arrives. When I ordered it, the only options available for the hard drive were 4200 RPM drives. My question is, does the company only allow you to choose from 4200 RPM drives becuase there are heat issues with the 5400/7200 RPM drives. I was thinking about putting a hitachi 60 gig 7200 or a hitachi 80 gig 5400 drive in it. Do these drives produce significanty more heat than a 4200 RPM drive. I just don't want to shorten the life of my laptop. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Neither the 7200 RPM drive nor the 5400 RPM drives produce a significant amount more heat or suck significantly more power. You probably won't notice the downsides of a faster drive at all, but you will definitely notice the benefits if you upgrade. Go for it.

my old toshiba 40gb 5400rpm put out significantly more heat than the hitachi 60gb 7200rpm that I'm using right now (using mobile meter, it reports ~10"C difference in HD temp).

Heat and battery life, when worse, it's insignificant, as I've been reading it here now and then.

How many degrees ºC are we talking about? My E7K60 40 gb 7200 rpm runs constantly at 38ºC and never goes higher then 41ºC.

What about yours?

Thanks.

Thanks for the help. I'm leaning towards the 7K60, but read somewhere that an 80GB 5400 RPM drive would be just about as fast in performance as a 60GB 7200 RPM becuase of something to do with the platters. Does anybody know anything about this, or would the 7200 RPM drive be significantly faster than the 5400 RPM drive.
