Ethernet connection always shows limited or no connectivity

I've had my Sager 3790 for about two months and I've been enjoying every minute but everytime I try to connect to the network on campus I always get limited or no connectivity and I thought the problem was with the network only but when I try to connect to my home computer through the ethernet crossover cable it shows the same thing. It also showed the same thing when I tried to connect to my friend's laptop so I am wondering if the problem is software or hardware.

I am having the same problem. I was told by Sager's tech support to reformat windows and install the LAN drivers first before anything else and see if I have a connection. If that doesn't work the LAN is probably deffective.

if you have sp2, that may be the issue. try static ip configuration. if it works, it's an xp problem. also try to repair the conection, sometimes it works.

Did SimpleC get this resolved? I just got my laptop today and after installation, it wasn't detecting a cable connected. It sees the card but not the cable. I reinstalled Windows XP so it was the FIRST thing I installed after setup. Same thing. Network cable is unplugged, but it detects the card... and a 1394 Connection. (Wireless LAN is working fine, but don't have a wireless router with me yet. Apparently, a neighbor does =) I'd rather get both up and running though). Tried the static IP as well. Any other suggestions?

Well, I called PCTorque and their diagnosis was a bad NIC. Gotta deal with Sager.

Let me know if your issue gets resolved, SimpleC!

Fixed it

I backed up all my data and did a reinstall of windows (no sp2) and installed the lan drivers and i was able to connect my ethernet to my router so the problem is fixed but when I connect to the campus network i still get the limited or no connectivity, so the problem seemed to be with the drivers and the school network. thanks for the help.

Which LAN drivers did you use? The ones from the CD, or the new ones on the Realtek website?

ones that came with the CD

I used the lan drivers on the CD but I am also wondering if there is some good software out there in the "free" market that can let me sniff out internet connection and packets, since it seems like my campus network is always full

I found that only one antenna wire was connected to the wireless card in my 3790. Once I connected it, wireless connectivity improved dramatically.

I have seen this issue more than a few times on my home wireless network. Maybe only once at school, but then again, trying to get any connection at school is a hassle. I assume that it is due to overload and WAP locations.

NIC sees cable but no internet or connectivity

I am also working on a brand new 3790. Haven't reviewed officially because LAN connection won't work yet. Its a great machine, everything else works great and no dead pixels. PCT sent it out 8 days ago and arrived Japan in what up to now was perfect working order. So shipping time was excellent, very happy with the screen size and resolution. just have to fix the NIC or :gulp: RMA the unit for what might be a faulty LAN/NIC... This is something I really, really, don't want to do. I keep wondering if its something I did wrong on the install. I got the sans-OS option but followed the instructions as per the user guide.

FYI, the wireless connection, Audio, and PC camera all work fine. Haven't tested the bluetooth yet. Thanks to all who have posted, it helps alot! Hope to contribute with a review/fix soon. Of course, any suggestions are welcome!

Forgive me if this is too much, but I wanted to post for those, like myself, that aren't familiar with the process of pinging your own nic card. I am still trying to figure out if the Nic card on my 3790 works or not. Sent an email to Luke at PCT for help. Any suggestions welcome, I am looking for better drivers to see if the Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC will respond. Right now, I have it connected to a ethernet hub. My Desktop PC is also connected (as I type this) to this hub and is how I can post and research the problem. Already tried a direct connection to the laptop without the hub and did an IPCONFIG refresh but it didn't work.
See my command prompt ping results below:

Wireless and NIC work fine on sager 3790

The way my ISP works the Mac address was the problem as per an IT friend of mine. When the cable modem connects the ISP seems to register the mac address of the machines connecting to it. They only want one to connect so I just had to reset the cable modem and both the NIC and wireless saw the internet connection.

My fault for not telling the whole story before about how I got my internet connection. I would guess that with a wireless router instead of an access point, I could share the IP address and have more than one computer connected to the cable modem. I don't know, but will be working on this.
So let me tell you now that my sager 3790 is in top shape and runs battlefield 1942 DC well, very smooth graphics. More on my humble review after some playing time and benchmarks. Happy Thanksgiving from Japan!

Why are you using a crossover cable instead of a normal CAT5/6 cable? I agree with tmgp, just try and repair the connection.

If it's the NIC, try disabling\uninstalling it in the device manager, ands let XP re-find it using XP's drivers once it restarts.

Little update i tried manually setting my ip and i did recieve information in so and ive always been sending so i dont think the cards bad. This is starting to piss me off cause i have 2 research papers do next week and no internet in my room makes it hard. Oh and its a wired campus network anyone have any ideas?

Sorry if this seems like spamming just thought i'd let ya know after deep thinking i thought that it might be that adaware which i ran right before my network connection went down may have deleted a network sensitive file. Turns out it did (and i can further conclude that it did after internet research) After a reinstall my laptop is back up into pristine condition. Now just to update all the crapola again.

And the AdAware deleted which network file?

SirBob, what was the file that got deleted? That's good info for the rest of us that use AdAware. Thanks
post #19 of 28
I couldnt figure what the exact file was but I was able to narrow it down a bit. It appears to have delted something from the system32 folder. ended up with a 169.XXX ip. Apparently an IP begining with 169 also happens to signify a critical error in windows network files or general network failures.

I think its WinXP SP2 frankly. Here is why. I have the same issue on my 3790 unless I put in a static IP. Then it works great. No problems at all. It just doesn't seem to be able to get a DHCP address. Then, my Brother in law came to visit and he has an HP laptop which did the exact same thing. Then I had a Compaq laptop which did the exact same thing too.

In all cases, the wireless card could get DHCP just fine, but the ethernet could not requiring a static IP.

My Macs have no problems getting DHCP, and neither does my Pocket PC - so I think its a WinXP SP 2 issue.
