700m or i8600 for college? - Page 2

i'm sitting in class right now on my 700m If you think you can keep high grades and still have your laptop in class, then I'd go for the 700m for portability. Otherwise get the 8600 which is kind of portable to. My best friend has one and we both bring them to class all the time, but he carries nothing but his laptop while I can carry my laptop as well as notes, folders, etc.

Like others said above, i only recommend the 700m if you already have a decent desktop at home. And if can play some of the older games like WC3 and D2. But Doom 3 is an absolute no go, lol.

no one at my school uses a notebook in class... it would be weird for me to do. im gonna start a thread on this, im curious.

Yeah you have to seriously ask yourself whether or not you are going to realistically be taking your laptop around with you every day. Most people think they will but they dont (see thread in general forum on college notebook use). I love my 8600. It is portable if it has to be, I throw my caselogic sleeve on it, load up my backback with my books and I'm off. And if i'm going to be typing papers all night, or just reasearching online, the 8600 has one beauty of a screen to stare at all that time
I agree with above posts in that you should feel out your class settings first. I dont know what school you are going to go to but I think I saw perhaps one student in my four years at william and mary take notes on his or her laptop and the rest of the class found it to be very distracting and annoying.
Good luck, but if you can, I'd hold out until you can get a feel for your school's atmosphere and your needs as far as a laptop go.

I personally prefer widescreen and would want a 700m or 8600. As some people have stated, however, don't settle for buying one RIGHT NOW. No use in loading up programs and the such now only to find out next fall that the machine has slowed considerably... but it's good that you're looking now. I thought I had a good search going on but found out all too late that there were two models I should have looked at but did not. :shrugs: Take a look at the Sager 3790 as well. If you'll be doing any kind of CAD work, best go with a M60. The 8600 can handle CAD, but the GPU is much better on the M60.

Keep the search going but MOST IMPORTANTLY -- keep your options OPEN.

You could always go with the 600m, it is a good balance in between the 700m and the 8600, it has a slightly larger screen (14.1" vs 12") And it has a dedicated graphic card (32 or 64 MB Radeon 9000 vs Intel Extreme 2) and it is lighter than the 8600 (starting 4.98 lbs vs 7.2 lbs) and it is thinner than the 700m and 8600 (1.29" vs 1.5 and 1.52)

Thanks for all your replies. I have been more or less convinced to hold off. Since the reason I am thinking of it now is for my birthday which is in a few days, suppose I'm suprised with one. Is it that hard to return to Dell?
I think there is a 30 day return policy, but you should wait in my opinion until the end if your current school year

21 day return policy from the day the computer ships (after the boxing stage)

If you get a system you want and like, there's no reason to return it... but if it's still possible, I would tell whoever might be sending you that gift to hold off. (If you're willing to put off your birthday present for ten months...)
