8600 which produces more heat 7200rpm hd or 9600 ati

Thread Starter
I am concerned about heat. And am wondering which produces more heat the 7200 rpm or the ati 9600 video card?

Should I opt for the 4200 rpm and nvidia card for less heat?

How much more heat does the 7200 rpm give off?

My HD is at 42; my GPU, 53. You'll feel the heat from the HD more as its right under your left palm.

If you won't be gaming, there's no need to go for a high-end video card (unless you're doing CAD work). The 7200 is great -- very fast.

The 7200 hard drive is supposed to give off less heat than the 5400/4200 drives.

obviously the video card does during intensive gaming

??

That seems counterintuitive.... I would have guessed the drive with the higher rotation speed would be hotter.

Why is that?

Femco slider and various technologies are *supposed to* keep the temperatures about at the same level. A friend had a 40 gig (either 5400 or 4200), and from what I noticed, it seemed to run cooler than my 7200. But when I felt his palmrest, his comp hadn't been on for too long.

I was thinking about upgrading my 8600 to the 7200 hard drvie but heard this will reduce battery life and that a 5400 drive would make more sense. I love having the long battery on the 8600 as all my old laptops die out after little more than one hour.

The 7200 RPM drive really doesn't decrease the battery life compared to a 5400.

Get the 7200RPM drive AND the ATI 9600 Pro together - you won't regret the combination!

If I have not remembered wrongly, 7200 HD has a power saving feature
