What’s up with “new” machines on Craigslist.org?

Thread Starter
I’m interested in buying a 700m so I decided to look on Craigslist.org to see if I could find a slightly used one and save a few bucks. Instead, almost every 700m listed says “new” in a “sealed” box.

I thought Dell machines could only be purchased straight from Dell? Why are there so many seemingly new machines available for sale from third parties? Something doesn’t seem right.

TIA.

Because of the coupons Dell has had in the last few weeks (like the $750 one) a lot of people have bought computers for the purpose of re-selling them.

some on CL's are scams but the legits ones are from a guy who got a few on the $750 coupon to resell.

No Sh*t!! A cool million to be a Dell reseller. I thought about looking into it once however; a million $ seems a tad high for the honor.

Oh and thanks DELL-Machina for the recommendation for the D-link DI-624 router Ver C. Got it today from ZZFly and it has been working great throughout my townhouse.

there are tons of 700m's on ebay right now too. To tell you the truth I bought one with half a mind to sell it right away but looks like everyone else had the same idea, plus it hardly seems worth it for $100 profit. I'm keepin mine though as its a huge improvement over my old notebook. Anyways you could probably pick up a 700m for pretty cheap from one of these auctions.

Odd thing is, the company I worked for was a Dell reseller, and I KNOW they didn't have the cash to put up a 1m deposit... Wonder if there are different levels of resellers or what??

UCF (University of Central Florida), sells dells.

that makes sense, alot of students order their thinkpads and ibooks through their school. Dell might as well cash in on this market.

Help me out...what was the $750 coupon all about? Maybe I'll wait for the deal to come along again???

Thanks again.

I'm awakening this old thread to ask:

I saw the deal below linked off of Criagslist. I've been looking for something more robust, but it's a tempting deal and I need a new laptop soon as the hard drive on this one is starting to sound like my Vanagon.

How fast should I run from this? I talked to the guy last night. He's in Portland today, but will be back in Seattle Monday so I would buy this in-person. One big thing I wondering about is warranty transfer. I see how ownership transfer is done by Dell here. As a condition of purchase, should I sit down in a coffee shop somewhere with my current laptop and get him to fill out that page, with the proper information (like him him show me ID) just to make sure that happens?

I'm also concerned about the "factory sealed box." I want him to open the box. I want to make sure the thing isn't filled with a cutting board or something.
