What would I need to setup a home streaming media server, hell what would I even need to access my computer remotly. I'd like to do this on the cheap

I've got Windows 2000 pro, Apache(dont know if that could help), and anything that I could get for free or as a developer edition.

I was just thinkin if you could stream your movies, you could use up a lot less space on you lappy, especially of 80 gigs is small for you.

It really is kind of unclear what you're wanting to do. If you're just looking for a place on the network to store movies that you can connect to with your laptop across the local network, you really don't need anything else besides a server/desktop with hard drive space. Share the drive/folder in the desktop with the movies in it and map that share as a drive on the laptop, then use it like it was a drive in your laptop. You can play the movies directly across the network.

right, i stream my movies, etc across the network with the aid of my modded xbox, xbox media center, and a simple windows share ... so if you are wanting to stream movies, music, etc then i would seriously consider modding an xbox ... even if you don't have one it'd be worth the money to pick up a used one off of ebay or something and mod it

It sounds to me like he's looking to build a HTPC (Home Theater PC), connect live TV, DVD's, or mount DVD ISO's and then have the ability to access them across a wireless network throughout his home. There is a lot of software out there that will do this.

If this is what you are talking about, let me know and I'll share what I've found out. I'm planning on doing this myself over the next year.

Ok, my computer is messing up and I didn't see anything past the first 3 posts before I responded 8P.

That's an interesting concept there mate. I'm not sure how you would do that, but now that I have the idea, I'll have to attempt something like it myself.
