Dell 9200 Screen

I think I am about to purchase the Dell 9200. I already own the Dell 8600 and I am pleased with the laptop.

My final deciding factor in upgrading, and then giving my older 8600 to my employee, is the screen. I want the best screen on the market. I have been to the local BestBuy, CompUSA, Circuit City, etc. and have viewed the various laptops at those locations.

I really want a screen that is sharp as the Toshiba G15 and Sony A series. Each company has their own silly title, such as TruBrite, Xbrite, YouNameitBrite screen technology.

Is this technology incorporated into the Dell 9200? Is the screen brighter than my 8600? The 8600 is not bad, but its not as bright and sharp as those Toshiba's and Sony's. Thanks.

Don't buy the 9200 your going be sorry if you do, because Dell has it self as they think they are so big that they can weather the bad reports about their full of sh** representatives. Try later when they have a better review on this new but not the greatest product form GD Dell.

Probably not going to happen... 9800 is a big card and lots of heat.

The person to ask about the screen is probably Mguyen due to he is the only one I know of that has one already. I personally am getting a 9200 since I have no laptop at all and need to start somewhere or I will be playing the waiting game forever.

chazzy, why do 90% of your posts always turn into a garbled mess of verbiage??

peteboyd, if the specs of the i9200 intrigue you, then go ahead and purchase one. Dell gives you 21 days to test drive the notebook, and if you do not like it simply return it for a full refund.

I would say his signature ends in a "garbled mess of verbiage" too. Who really includes the software? . . . IE . . . Windows Media Player . . . Paint . . . Notepad . . . Calculator . . .

Getting back on topic, the answer is no. The 'ultra sharp' is the same technology as that in the current dell screens. The 700m has an enhanced screen, but not the 9200.

If you want the best screen, it would be very hard to go past the Sony WUXGA 17" Xbrite, followed by the Sager 17" WSXGA (same as HP Brightview). The others are WXGA.

OK. Thanks all. I guess I am just going to wait until early next year. I was hoping for the following requirements, but it seems every laptop manufacturer falls short in one category:

17 inch Screen (Xbrite or similar technology)
128MB Video RAM
2.0 or better Ghz Pentium M
4+ Hours of Batter Life

So far I have looked at the Toshiba G15 series and it fills the bill except the battery life is only 1.5 hours. Then I looked at the Sony A series and it works except for the fact that the Video Ram is only 64MB - jeez. Finally the Sager 4570 works but it uses the AMD DTR processor so again you only get a 1.5 hour battery. I was hoping the Dell had the briteview, xbrite, or whatever technology. Oh well...

just put the $30 nushield on it, and you've got your own xbrite screen...the 9200s got everything else you mentioned
post #13 of 26
but xbrite is not just a reflective layer. I think its something more than that. It allows you to see the screen even in well lighted areas *Outdoor when its sunny*

this is a hard task for most laptops without the xbrite technology.

MY 8600 screen is great! It has great brightness

I have to agree that you should wait until some reviews come out or opinions from people that have it already come out. That way you have a good idea of what you will get BEFORE you order.

I like my 8600 as well, but it is not the same brightness as the TruBrite, Xbrite technology that other vendors now offer. I was hoping the 9200 had that technology and I would purchase one this instant.

Does this "XBrite" really do much? I don't see much difference between my 8600 and the Sony Screens (only that mine has a better resolution ).

I think it is jusdst a matter of personal preference. After viewing everything on the market I am either going to get the Toshiba G15 or Dell 9200. I would love to know if Sager plans on introducing a 17 inch Pentium M chip configuration. Thanks.

I don't think there is a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) option for the 9200. Also, you said you bought the 9200 but have 8600 listed in your specs.

Yes FlashRam you are correct on both accounts.

In a rush, I simply copied the specs from my 8600 to the 9200 purchase that I listed. They are about the same, I just forgot to replace it with the WUXGA 17 inch screen - I caught it on a later post in another forum. I was just too excited about the 25% off because that saved over $730.

Second, I still have the 8600 - using it right now in fact. I will give it to my employee and then I will use the 9200 once I get it in three weeks. Will update my specs at that time and post a review.

Full specs are below of my purchase and the price. Note that half of the software I could care less about and is just installed automatically. Odd - I got two emails with different prices (the acknowledgement was higher, the confirmation which I trust is below). Hopefully I get charged the lesser value.
