4750 Issues

Hey everyone, I just received my 4750 a week ago, and since then my social life has all but become extinct. Anyway. The 4750 is a really cool machine, but..., there are always the buts, there are definitely some issues here that need resolving very quickly by whomever is concerned (these problems seem to prop up for most users, and AFAIK they are sill unresolved):

1) Sound card: this seems to be the culprit of countless issues, including lock-ups, stuttering, and bad microphone. I've tried the AC 64 and the older 62 drivers (as well as the new 65 Codecs, released yesterday), all to no avail. Sound still stutters every few minutes, and this is not acceptable. I'm dying to figure what the problem is, I thought it was low processor speed in battery mode, but I wasn't running anything else except a music file in Winamp, so I would say that's hardly the issue (although putting the processor on max seems to lower the stuttering, but not eliminate it).

Also, I had the machine completely lock up (no ctrl-alt-del or even mouse movement) while trying to run the Sound Config application a couple of times. So definitely something is wrong there.

2) Video: On several occasions, while playing Doom 3, the screen would become multi-colored with green strips (as some have pointed out). I don't think this is due to high temps, as I was only playing for 20 mins. If temps are the case, then this AMD+ATI monster needs to go back to the drawing board, as it's supposed to be a power machine. Also had a few total lock-ups here. I tried using the Sager included drivers, the latest ATI's, and the Omegas, all to the same effect (not overclocked).

3) Fans: using Bios version 1.03, the fans run like crazy whenever I put the CPU at full speed, even if I'm not utilizing it (just browsing the web or playing a music file). This is really annoying, as increasing the CPU speed to max seems to help with the sound stuttering, but creates all this fan noise. Isn't there a fan control utility out there for the 4750???

These are all my gripes for now, feel free to add your own complaints/me toos/solutions.

What video drivers are you using?

Seems like everything just isn't working. Is the laptop elevated at all? Like spooky said, what video drivers are you using?

That is the problem that I had with mine. Apparently the video card itself was bad. I sent it back to Sager and they repalced the motherboard. Since then, however, it has been running perfectly! No more video problems. I also got funky dotted lines on my desktop that just suddenly appeared over the entire screen at random times. It was bizzare. I have a feeling that maybe VIA just did a shoddy job assemling the motherboards. Not that they are bad motherboards, no, I think the engineering behind them is probably solid, but maybe there was something wrong with the actual assembly. Maybe some techy guy sneezed on a batch or something. Definately get on the phone or email Sager and they will send you an RMA number to get it fixed.

darn, I'm going overseas, I guess I'll have to call Sager when I come back.

As for the video drivers, I used the latest Omegas, but they crashed, so I went back to the ATI Catalyst 4.10 drivers. Maybe I should go to the original ones that came on the CD???

/so no fan utility?

No fan utility but rumour is it that they are working on one.

I had the same problem with the video and used this tweak and it solved the problem for me.

1) Go to system properties, to performance options and then to advanced. Change vitual memory to initial size of 2500MB and maximum size to 3500MB.

2)run regedit and then go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Session Manager\ Memory Management

A. DisablePagingExecutive - double click it and change to 1
B. LargeSystemCache - double click it and change to 1

Reboot
