Dell Precision M60 Review

Last time I wrote here it was asking for advice on what machine to go in for video editing and i was caught up between a Precision M60 and an Inspiron 8600 . Well here I am typing out this review on a M60 and I am so glad that I made that choice.

The machine is simple fantastic and runs like a dream and the graphic card does the trick and with the moderate specs it has -it does the job damn well. It is PentiumM 1.7 Ghz with 1GB RAM, 60Gb 7200 rpm drive, 128MB GoFX700 Video card and I got a 160GB Seagate external hard drive to provide extra space for the media files. The machine has a 15" screen but it runs at a 19200 X 1200 screen resolution which provides such a huge working area -which proves so much useful with the video editing software - gives ample room to have all my bins and folders open while having a nice big source/record monitor and the timeline open. Video editors will definitely appreciate the extra workspace especially when editing on a single screen machine.

The battery life s decent and gives about 3 and half hours for normal stuff and for video editing gives about an hour and half or so...the laptop doesn't get heated up quickly and even when it does the fan occasionally switches on and switches off after sometime - and it is silent too...the laptop itself gets slightly warm but not hot, which is a huge advantage as it saves burnt laps :-)

The only negative about the machine would be the price but since I got a really good deal on it I am a happy chappy and can't complain at all. Overall I am really pleased with the machine and I would highly recommend it to any editor looking for portability combined with power for location editing. and this machine will also appeal to engineers or designers or animators who use graphic intensive applications.

Hope that this review helps someone in making their choice.

I accually have a D800 wich has the same chassis. I find the fan to be quite noisy for my taste. It does not turn on too often and stays on for a short time at a time. I also have a low end Toshiba laptop and the fan there is almost totally silent. It seems like the Dell fan is much more powerful than the Toshiba. I also find that the D800 heats rather fast sitting on your lap and the fan keeps turning on and off quite often. It's not a big problem, I've heard nosier fans but it is noisy enough to be a disadvantage when recording in my home studio.

Hauxon, if you download FanGUI, you can set the fans speeds to be "low." They are far quieter on low than on high.

And thanks for the review! I'm glad someone was able to get an M60 to review.

Hi hauxon,
strange -it must be your machine or something...because mine doesn't get heated up...maybe it is the aluminium body on the m60 which helps dissipate the heat quicker. and you can not compare a latitude with a precision, though they are on the same chasis -the builds are different and so are the materials used -thats why a premium is charged for buying a precision {because of better materials}.

i forgot to mention that the wireless connection rocks as well...it picks up wireless networks with so much ease and i use the laptop at school { www.southseas.co.nz } as well as at home and i never had a problem connecting to the network at any stage.

also since i love watching a lot of movies- i use the DVD player [a DVD- RW] on my laptop to watch them instead of my TV - reason : I can watch movies 16:9 format {widescreen format} which on my TV gets squished back to 4:3 .... and i absolutely love it...the clarity and the viewing angles are superb.

And no worries gmn- thought i would post a review because it could help someone make a better investment.

cheers
