700m won't go below 600 MHz

When I first got my 700m, I did a fresh reinstall of XP Home on the hard drive that originally came in the machine. I installed SpeedSwitchXP and set it to dynamic switching and the CPU was throttling down to about 45 MHz and up to 1600 if it needed to. I got 5 and a half hours out of the extended battery. However, I installed my 7200 RPM drive yesterday and installed XP on it again, along with all the exact same drivers that I used before. However, now when I set SpeedSwitchXP to dynamic switching, the processor either throttles down to 600 MHz at the lowest or up to 1600 MHz. I have read that this has been a problem for a few other people with Dothans, but I have not found a solution. Has anyone found out how to solve this? Thank you.

Interesting. I didn't think it was possible for Dothans to throttle below 600MHz. I've got a 1.5 and have never seen it dip below 600. Is 45MHz enough to run WinXP in an idle state?

I'm not sure if it's an error reading the frequency or what, but other people have reported that their Dothans do the same thing.

Hmm, I look forward to other responses on this thread. If possible, I'd love to allow mine to throttle below 600MHz!

yes it does throttle below 600mhz, if you have any usb devices plugged in like a mouse, the cpu will not throttle below 600mhz. i do have speedswitchxp installed as well.

Wow, I didn't even think about that. I'll try it out.

I don't have any USB devices attached to mine.

One thought that occurs to me is how you two are calculating the speed. In SpeedSwitchXP do you have it configured to ask Windows, ask BIOS, or calculate it real-time?

I don't think the real-time calculation is accurate. I have it report the speed from Windows API, and I always see the 599MHz (as is visible within right-clicking "My Computer")

Here is a link from Intel's site listing Max Performance/Battery Optimized modes for Dothans ranging from 1.5GHz to 2.1GHz:

http://support.intel.com/support/pro.../CS-007981.htm

They show all Dothans using a battery optimized mode of 600MHz. Obviously, I could be wrong, but I don't think they can go below that.

I removed my USB mouse, and sure enough, the frequency drops below 600 MHz. I have it set to calculate real-time. Maybe it just says it drops below 600 MHz because of the error in calculation, but it goes way below 600 MHz. Anyway, the 5 and a half hours of battery life isn't bad regardless.

Interesting. Can you confirm that Windows shows it below 600MHz as well, in the "Control Panel -> System -> General" area?

Windows shows it at either 589 MHz or 1.6 GHz, so it's probably just that ssxp is incorrectly reporting the frequency.

Software error. Speedstep will not drop it below 600MHz
