I tried the search function, but I did not get a whole lot of information regarding my problem.

I have a compaq 1800 XL that always freezes after a few minutes of use. The notebook will boot up fine, but after moving from one window to another...the screen freezes up, mouse pointed does not work as well as all the keys on the keyboard. This happens all the time. Please, I need help. Thank you.

We are not mind readers so please add some more info on your unit.
OS, is this a new machine, has this started since install software or being on the net? battery or main supply etc, etc.
More info that you can give the better chance of someone helping you without you keep adding extra info to your post...

Computer Freeze

Wu-Tang,
The OS is Win 2000 and the computer is about 4.5 years old. Memory is about 192 meg...The problem initially occurred when I powered on the computer to boot up. The temperature was almost close to freezing...so the laptop was obviously cold. I am not sure if the cold laptop made my computer feeze up for no reason. Once in awhile, the computer will run fine on the internet and several basic computer operations. All of a sudden, the computer will freeze up (no keyboard control + no mouse control). Any suggestions?

Being cold shouldn't hurt it. It may be an overheating problem, but if that was the case it wouldn't immediately boot back up. Does it typically immediately boot back up when you try?

4 1/2 yrs old!? Wow, well it could definitely be your hardware, but more likely just a software issue with Win2k... check your startup programs both in the startup folder and the registry run locations, then run system file checker by typing sfc /scannow at the run window...
How old is this 2k installation??

well... as a last resort..
It would be the easiest way, but if you can't backup anything first...your kinda screwed... GL

BTW... if you do end up wipin it clean, be sure to make an image of it this time once its setup... save yourself the headache.

LOL, I could literally freeze your computer with Alumina, LOL!! Read my posts on new form of liquid cooling, and see more.

TIP- Get a new comp, or upgrade the RAM. I recommend a new comp..

The computer runs fine for a few minutes then it freezes up...for some reason, the display seems to be a little grainy at times...sort of like the computer is out of memory and then it goes back to normal picture quality. The win2k OS has been updated several times from the web after I had installed the OS from scratch. Once I get home, I will go ahead and run the system file check you mentioned. I will post back after the file check. Thanks.

Note: RAM - 192 Mb.

More RAM is always better, however you're not in critical condition there...
Where your focus really needs to be is with the amount of resident appz you have starting with Windows. It is always a good idea to minimize or eliminate these if possible, especially in a system that old. Run Spyware scans with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D, as Spyware/Adware will also eat your resources.

Navigate to Start-Programs-Startup and clear any unnecessary shortcuts.

Then, Start-Run- Type Regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN and clear out any unnecessary links.
Do the same at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN...
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DELETE IN THE REGISTRY!!!
NOTE: Your run keys can be backed up by right clicking the Run folder in the tree and selecting export.

Alternately your startup apps can be viewed and altered using an applet built into the current version of Spybot S&D. Once open click Mode and chose advanced. In the side navigation bar chose Tools and then Startup. Delete all you can from here.

After all this make sure you defrag completely.
