Question about HP Pavilion

hi,

My friend has bought a HP pavilion ze5375us about 4 months ago. Everything seem to work fine except for one, the graphics card. It is an ATI 345 IGP which uses shared memory and it can't handle fps games such as Jedi Knight and Unreal 2003. I wonder if there is any way to upgrade the graphics card at all ? Everything about the laptop looks good except for the slow graphics which is a shame.

Thanks

Typically there is. You would (obviously) need to buy a better video card; check the motherboard in the HP and see if there is an AGP slot or just PCI. If it's AGP - great! If it's PCI, well, you can get a better card, but not "one of the best" as most graphics card mfg's do not do PCI much anymore.

The next step would be to go into the BIOS and see if you can DISABLE the onboard graphics, and whatever other setting that switches video from onboard to PCI/AGP slot.

The HP's manual should be of some help (God knows HP Tech support is not); also check HP's online knowledge base - sometimes there's actually useful information in there.

Thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to mentioned that the pavilion ze5375us is a laptop in case of confusion. ATI did mention in press that the IGP family will support upgrade to a 9600 pro graphics card. I'm not a computer guy and I don't understand some of their statement. Can this laptop be upgraded ?

;-) well in the article.

"The RADEON IGP family also allows the users to upgrade their systems with a discrete performance graphics chip, such as ATI’s MOBILITY™ RADEON™ 9600."

so in theory yes, unless gateway has soldered the graphics card in or something. ask them.

I've read conflicting articles. Some said yes, some said no. HP of course would try and persuade you to buy a newone instead. So their information is unreliable. It was mentioned that ATI IGP family came with a mini AGP or PCI (or something) and that there is space somewhere for upgrade.....People are selling laptop display cards on ebay, I wonder if they can fit into other laptops.
