it's a freakin piece of cloth...just go to the store and get a micro fiber dish rag if you want it and it will cost you a lot less. unless your screen dips and touches the keyboards (i.e. you got an imac/powerbook for which the shaggy and similar products were design for), it ain't doin nothing except collecting dust anyways. i know on my 700m, there are little rubber feeties around the lcd bezel that keep the screen above the keyboards. another option is to get some of them adhesive clear rubber feet you can buy for like 90 cents a pack and put them around your bezel. companies also sell the things for much more for the same purpose.
the protectors like nushield don't fall off b/c they are non-adhesive. they have wings or whatever that slide under the bezel and the bezel holds them in place. they aren't like the fellowes protectors you buy for your cell or for your pda. i've been using a thicker transparency that i bought at the office store, cut it down to size and voila, about 9 cents for a screen protetor. i also had bought a stupid Bstrong which the adhesive didn't work and they have yet to send me a replacement without the adhesive like they promised, so I am highly critical of that company now. so i strongly (pun intended) do not recommend them. considering that the transparency (don't get the kind that you use in copier machines or printers they are too thin and the vinyl is too soft and will scratch after the first run in with a cloth) is the same darn thing essentially as nushield etc, 9 cents is muchos better than paying $8-$100 (yes, i've seen some companies selling for $100 for a piece of clear plastic). besides, if you don't like it, then you can chuck it and you only lost out on 9 cents. just cut the sucker to size. no distortion/clarity problems or whatever you've heard. again, recommend the thick one that you write on for overhead projectors. yeah remember those things?
that has been my experience over the past few weeks of playing around with different screen protectors.
BTW, if you use cloth as a lcd cleaner, you may want to wash or shake it out first, since keeping it on the keyboard and lugging your laptop around will inevitably lead to dust particles getting trapped on it and acting as a nice abrassive when you are cleaning your LCD.
