gentoo - "emerge system" wont work

I am trying to install 2004.2 gentoo on my amd64 gateway laptop from stage1. I have finished with the bootstrap, and am ready to 'emerge system' but when I try to do this, it says

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/patch-2.5.9 failed/
!!! Function src_compile, Line 38, Exitcode 2
!!! emake failed

can anyone help me?

You may have to resort to gentoo forums for this one... looks like a portage problem. Try emerge sync as well
