new DELL i5160 user; very UNHAPPY; fan problem after Stand By; neef your advice

hi guys; i'm new in your forum; i received a i5160 last week; P4 3.06,
SXGA, 1024MB, 64MB, 40GB, DVD-RW, very happy untill i set it in Stand By
and power it on again! the fan started working constantly then, FOR EVER!
Normally, when i power on my system from scratch (e.g. when i wake up in
the morning and check my e-mails) the fan is activated for a couple of min.
and pauses when windows start up; it is then silent for a while, activated
for a few seconds and then pauses again, and so on; every min. it works
for a few seconds, then silent, the next minute the same; it never works
constantly when i run simple applications like internet explorer or type a
word document; and in my opinion this is the normal behaviour of a fan!
BUT, when i decide to set my 5160 in Stand By and some time later power
it on back again (so it is not hot or tired at all) the fan is activated and
starts working CONSTANTLY, FOR EVER, without having that silent pauses
it used to have before; i mean FOR EVER guys! this is very annoying to
me and i'm seriously thinking of sending it back to DELL! i also confirmed
with another i5160 owner of the forum, that this is not the normal fan
behaviour (his fan pauses and is activated periodically after a Stand By,
the same way as did before)! PLEASE HELP; any opinion is more than
welcome to me! take care and wish you all never unpleasant surprises
like mine, with your DELL machines!

Use search, other inspiron owners have this problem. Fn + Z is the roxer, or just restart it...

hi again; i forgot to mention before that i contacted DELL about my fan behaviour;
the man there told me to press Fn+Power On for a few sec. a new window appeared
and we went through a diagnostic test tool for the fan; this test checked the max.
and min. speed of my fan (4553 and 2726 respectively) and then a message appeared
informing me that everything is OK; so that guy from DELL told me that the fan works
as it was suppose to work and i shouldn't worry about it - but i do!

CHEERS Struzor, but what is a roxer? (i did search the forum, they talk about general
overheating problems -how can they detect them?- but nobody about fan problem)

Try this URL it's free and no spam it's called speed fan, it measures each of your 3 fans and voltages and you can pick what temperature you want I have running at 40C, you can run it in fahrenheit or C.

See if this won't alleviate your problem there will be a dark grey fan installed on your desk top download is 1.10MB. I went with the F12 option for Dell it always works for them! I then I searched on the internet and found this, good luck to you member. I sincerly hope this alleviates your fan noise I have shared it with quite a number on this group, and other forums as well. You get more back when you give good advice and share it with friends you have not met yet.

brownerm: there is no mouse at all; had to time buy one, i may do so today
but it will definetely be a non-wireless, optical one;
chazzy: thanks for your tips; i will not try that software for the moment;
what about that F12 key, i couldn't understand what you meant;

When you start to boot up press your F12 key (above underscore and + keys) down till you get to testing menu.

You see both the F2 and F12 when you boot on the opper right hand corner. if you have fail turn off and try again.

You can test a hell of lost of systems you have on your computer including your fans performance, the tester will put your fan on low then high then low then high and other things, after which you will receive pass or fail.

After I installed speed fan I got a pass on that one and kept running it!
