Compaq Presario 2100 Overheating

I have a compaq presario 2140US. It worked fine for about a year, then one day it just crashed, i had to reinstall windows. Since that crash every time i play a game or do anything very cpu intensive it overheats and turns off. I did a prime 95 test on the ram, the ram is stable. I opened it up and made sure all the fans were working and that everything else was in its place. I then underclocked the AMD 2200 to 1ghz to see if it would be stable, no it still crashed with in 5 mins of gaming. It has to be the cpu, becuase it overheats when i do a prime 95 cpu test, but why would the cpu still overheat when its only running at 1ghz? I asked the tech's at compaq and those idiots were clueless. It will stay on and run aim / word or anything similar for weeks, it will play dvds without overheating, but it will not play games for more than 5 minutes. Any idea on how to fix it?

We can dosome slight modifications to the fan to get it to run cooler. 1st off get comcraps factory thermal transfer garbage pad removed and get some arctic silver. If this doesnt help Bend the brackets up slightly to force the fan/cooling assy down on the cpu more.. (Not too much) If it still overheats let me know.. ken@ikenfixit.com

dont forget to get rid of the dust in the heatsink.

Usually, the included thermal solution is enough for normal notebook operation (so your notebook was fine for a year) then dust builds up and insulates the fins (kinda like wrapping yourself up in a blanket) of the heatsink.

Typically, a Brush/Can of compressed air/Vacuum cleaner works well at removing dust. Since you have more than the access hatch open, i might suggest you give the treatment to everything (CPU, North Bridge and Graphics card if you have an independant one).

I took off the heatsinc to find out there was pretty much NO thermal greese on the cpu, so i wiped off the small amount left, and put on some artic silver 5. I thought this would fix it, but NO. It still does it! Its not the ram, not the cpu(cant be the cpu...), so its gotta be my chipset or mobo. Could it possibly be my power supply?

well now that i think of it, its not the power supply, cuz the battery would back it up, and to double check it i ran it on the battery and it still shut off. So it HAS to be the mobo?
