anyone have a toshiba 5105 'spare' geforce4 440 video card? - Page 11

im not talking about the ram chips. the nvidia chip is not neccesarily bad, it is the balling job that fails, I had a card that after a reheat worked for few hours of stress testing, but then failed. I replaced the nvidia chip which was pre-balled and the card worked no problems. I have these chips I'm just unable to reball them in order to replace them. Also there are cards out there with faulty nvram which would have to be replaced for functionality

Alright. I have 2 laptops going strong now after reheating BOTH the gpu's and nvram now.. but re-heating them real hot. I doubt about the bad samsung ram chips tho.. As far as logic goes, heat doesn't get a bad ram chip back to life, unless it was just bad connection..

I'll see how long it lasts. Thanks.

I think the answer is that there are different things that can fail. I am familiar with one case where the card failed immediately after a cat walked oner a running machine, flexing the top and breaking a solder connection at a memory chip. There is enough flex in the keyboard and the area next to the touchpad that you can strain marginal solder joints. Obviously, if the GPU or a memory chip is bad, heating it isn't going to help. I suggest that people use an extrenal keyboard whenever that is practical.

RickH, but in this case, i don't think the chips are bad AT ALL. Have you seen a lot of nvidia chips on video cards go bad in the last years ? Same for ram, it can't be all bad chips.. i don't believe this. It's just bad contact on *.bga on those cards. I've been playing for days with those. I got one that is ROCK SOLID even under stress tests, 3dmark, having the fan off, shaking bumping it... i don't think it will fail anymore.

I'll see. Thanks.

hello all...add me to the list of 5105 owners that have had the video die. this is completely BullS**t & I'll never buy another Toshiba again. That being said, I would really like to get my laptop fixed, rather than buy a new one. It seems like a such a huge waste to trash a great piece of equipment just for a stupid design flaw.

So....does anyone have a fix for this? I see that the problem seems to have been going on for 2-3 years now. Has NO one tried to organize a site dedicated to Toshiba's failed engineering? Has anyone tried to get this out to the media and put pressure on Toshiba to 'recall' or rework their flaw(s)? I see there was a class-action suit for 6100-series owners, but I wasn't too impressed with the outcome of it.

I see people guessing that it could be caused by bad traces, bad memory, bad video chip, bad BGA, etc. After 2-3 years, I would have thought that someone with some technical knowledge could have isolated the cause.

Ralph.. have you read the whole thread ? We did.

Thanks, cheeb.

Cheeb.
Yes, I did read the whole thread, although I did skim through the middle of it.

From what I'm understanding, it's suspected that the main graphics chip is bad OR that the 'balling' (is that the solder on the chip?) is bad OR that it's the memory. I can see that you and Protosh seem to be the experts for a solution, but I'm still a bit confused as to the exact fix for the board.

I have access to an electrical engineer through a friend of mine and can get him to replace or reseat the graphic chip if that's the case. Although if he's going to replace it, I need to find a source for a new chip...

I myself am trying to find new chips or someone who can reball them

Protosh, i personnaly think you are misleading people here to think you need to replace anything on the cards. In the meantime, you're selling those cards you buy 50$ from people on ebay 300$ - just reheating the vram chips.

Just my 2 cents....
I don't care if anyone from here buys my cards, the ones that I am selling have not been worked on at all, there was never anything wrong with those, I have a stack of bad ones, honestly though, your 2 cents are just that.
ok..now i'm even more confused. i thought the 2 of you were trying to help FIX the problem.... not throw poo @ each other

X2

Link below to show what is involved, not thorough but gives an idea.

Ima go to my local university and find an instructor/student who can point me to someone who can help me with this card.

This is the exact machine that I use, it is perfect for removing/reheating and installing BGA chips, although like I mentioned before, chips need to be preballed.

plus this beast is $16K

i will talk w/my buddy's friend, who is an electronic engineer, and see if he can do this for me (remove, re-ball, and replace) my chip.

i see someone on eBay has a video card upforsale (model FMC2G1)

You can call them, they have been out of it for at least 2 years now. Toshiba stopped making these. Now and then you can find one from some parts place, but often they fail after stress testing.
