anyone have a toshiba 5105 'spare' geforce4 440 video card? - Page 15

Thanks for the quick responses... umm yes i heated the video ram chips while it was out of the computer. Not quite sure what a power lead is. What do you mean by not seated? is there anything in particular i should look for? Thanks again!

There are several voltages produced on the motherboard. The flashing indicates one is bad. The battery board is in the front on the right. It plugs into the motherboard and connects to the main battery. Check all the cables and connections.

Is it possible to start a computer without the video card in? I am wondering if it is the video card that is causing these problems, but wouldnt the computer still be able to power up?
It can be disabled, but it needs to be plugged in.

is it possible that i blew somethign on the motherboard? or would something on the video card effect the power up of the computer? if so is there a way to detect it at all? or should i start looking into the salvage value of my laptop?

If you shorted something on the video card, you could have affected the MB or it could stop you from powering up. I am guessing when I say that damaging the MB is less likely.

i think i found the problem...

on the bottom of the video card when i was heating the chips apparently there is a small connecter piece[ not sure what u call it] that i knocked off... i was able to locate it on my workspace hoever. can i sodder it back on? or am i screwed hehe thanks,

Bad news

Well, my "fix" turned out to be temporary. After pullin gthe video card, heating the VRAM,and reassembling the computer ran flawlessly for many hours a day for about a week. Now all of a sudden it is up to its old tricks. One day the video corruption/artifacting and computer locking up came back after running for about 30 minutes. Then it started happening quicker and quicker after a cold start until now it only runs a few minutes. Still better than before the "fix" but it is pretty much unuseable. Perhaps I'll try again but I guess I'll soon be in the market for a new notebook.

Recooke VRAM

Well, I once again disassembled the computer and removed the video card and recooked the VRAM. After reassembly it is once again operating properly. Not sure how long it will last. I guess I'm not totally sure that the heat gun gets things hot enough to truly flow the solder. Maybe that is why the fix doesn't last?? Anyway wish me luck!

Hi all..
let me 1st say I loved this laptop for the 1st 2 years I owned it.

I have a Toshiba 5105-s501 with a slightly different issue...
right from day one, I noticed I was unable to play games like counterstrike unless I used the power cord... using the battery to play game me about 10mins of uptime. I called toshiba (as this was a brand new $2700 laptop at the time) and thay actually had the agll to tell me that to get the performance, the lpatop used both the power cord and the battery... This was an out-and-out lie.
But I really didn't mind plugging in, so I let it go.
about a year ago, I began having an issue while playing a graphic intensive game (like HL2) where the screen would start acting-up by going light/dark/light, etc.. to my amazement, I noticed that the laptop was draining the battery while plugged in! once the battery hit zero charge, the screen went nuts and the unit shut-off. This problem continued to get worse to the point where eventually, the laptop would no longer power on at all.

I sent it to laptoponcall.com (based in Ohio).
they had the unit for 3 months. told me the cmos power chips were bad, had to wait for parts, etc.. eventually replaced the whole motherboard. the unit came back slopppily assembled and covered in scratches (don't ever use them), including a few on the screen. whatever. I was just happy to ahve my laptop back (as this is STILL the best lapto screen on the market.. even the latest laptops nowadays come with far inferior screens as far as resolution, brightness, and field of view are considered). the repair was just over $600

well, here I am 5 months later with the unit doing the same crap all over again. now I'm mad becasue they won't fix it again as they only warranty their work for 30days.

has anyone here figured-out how to use this screen on a desktop computer?

OT:

Anyone wants to sell their Satellite 5105 S701 good working motherboard? Need it for a friend's computer with still working graphics card. If interested, please don't hesitate to PM me with your offer... TIA

Looking like a good place to post.. Toshiba's apparently not stepping up to the plate so folks guess what? Send them here.. If we dont repair we wont charge and weve seen all problems on all brands. I have repaired video card problems and I'd recommed not using the heat gun on anything. (BGA is a little more tricky than this).. Look us up online as weve been here a while and are glad to help.. I know that at one point I saw a post about possibly using the 16mb model of this video card. Does anyone recall this part of the discussion? Anyone try this as a 'fix'?

I can get a new one for just under $100 and they tell me it works on my 5105-S701...I don't really care about having the best card just would like to be able to use my laptop again. I don't do gaming or graphics on it just need to be able to run business applications, internet, email, linux, and such.

Thoughts?

The 16MB card, I assume, is the one from the 5005. That one has a different chip and will not work.
Ok, this is because? Different bios, connector, etc.?

Thanks, daniel
The system BIOS has code to support the chip. I think that in this case, the connector is the same, but in most cases they are different.

Same Here

Hi all, after using almost for 5 years my 5105 s701 decided to show me these vertical lines and other things I am so sad. After reading all posts it looks like there is no great solution. Heating up looks like something technical and without a clear guide with pictures , it seems to be a hard process.

Is there a step by step guide with pictures for heating?

or

What do you reccomend?

Thnx.

When I was suggesting it, before I tried it, I thought it would be simple. Now I have tried it and have gotten so I can fix some but not all the cards. The tools include an expensive rework station that can heat to 750 degrees with hot air, not a Home Depot heat gun. I have gotten good enough try buying a few broken ones on eBay and selling the ones I fix and parting out the ones I cannot. I'm afraid it isn't a project to attempt with a Radio Shack soldering iron or a general purpose heat gun. Certainly, if you decide not to try. you can send me a private message and I would discuss buying your broken machine.
