CPU Throthling Down?

Thread Starter
There's a discussion on the Dell website about how desktop CPUs has a lower temperature threshold (than mobile CPUs) before it throthles down to half speed.

On Sager 5660, is there a way to find out my CPU temperature, and is there a way to find out when throthling down is happening? I will be running games and complex number crunching simulations, so this issue really concerns me.

Is throthling down something that happens that often on a Sager, or were those guys just stiring things up to discourage people from switching?

I've heard people's theories of the potential problem. Using UD, 3DMARK2001, and Sandra testing reaching 100% CPU utilization for hours, I couldn't see how there could be any problems with throttling. I know if it were an issue there would be an article in CPU, PC World, PC Magazine, or one of the major review sites exposing the problem. They would be pointing at Alienware and Sager as an advisement to buyers to beware especially for gamers. I haven't seen any mention with all the testing.

Does the CPU on the 5660 run at half speed when on batteries like the Dell Smartstep 250? Tom's hardware article: http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/0...101/index.html

It can throttle when unplugged from the wall if it's set in the bios to do so. You can change the settings in the bios for 0%, 25%, 37.5%, or 50%. At least in the 5660 you can, I won't know about the 8886 until I get one to check it out. I've never got it to throttle from heat though even with it enabled for 50% in the bios.
