Need help beebster!

I figured I'd just cut to the chase and ask beeb rather than just hope he reads it, but I put it in the forums instead of PM b/c someone else may be having similar problems.

Actually it's two problems:

First, when I capture video using that TV Studio program, I only record tiny little files and they won't play in media player. What am I doing wrong here? I have the settings set at 'best' so that it tells me it's going to take about 50 MB to record 1 minute, but I record a 4 minute eminem video and its only about 5 or 6 MB big. Then when I try to play it in Windows Media Player I just get audio. Any ideas...?

Okay everyone, stop judging me for wanting to record an eminem video... I promise I'll use my 8886 recorder for better purposes in the future.

The other problem is that when I watch TV, I only get either the cruddy 8886 speakers or anything else that I have plugged into the microphone jack. For some reason, I can't get the sound to come through my USB speakers (which sound way better and get way louder). Any ideas?

Maybe if I got S/PDIF speakers I could make that work, but I haven't read a coherent discussion on that topic on this board yet. (Not knocking the board; I spend more time here than anywhere else on the web. It just seems like no audiophiles have picked up an 8886 yet or something...)

Ah, for the first problem, you can't use media player to play mpeg2, that is dvd quality and a dvd code... Try either realone (because it plays DVDs), or any dvd program like WinDVD (the one that came with the 8886).

As far as the audio, do you need drivers for your USB speakers? I've never used those so I don't really know what do to with them if they aren't working... Do they have their own program or volume controls that you need to access?

If you want to us spdif, you just need a speaker system with an spdif input and then you plug your 8886 into that. You'd have to get a cable that works with that splitter the 8886 comes with, I believe it's an optical cable or something like that. THere are some audiophiles here that can correct me and give you more specifics.

As far as addressing the thread to me, lol, I certainly don't mind, and I doubt anyone here will take offense, lol. I just hope I helped! Have a great night!

nah, I don't think that's the issue. The files that I record are super small. They are saved as an .mpg. I tried playing them in WinDvd and it didn't work, said it needed to be in a different format like .avi or something.

Yeah, that S/PDIF thing is the most confusing thing about this lappy. I'm pretty sure it's digital RCA, rather than optical, but I've read people saying it's both so many times on this forum that it's made my head spin.

So, then we should try to clear it up right now. Is anyone using Toslink (optical digital out) with their 5660 or 8886?

You recorded an eminem music video (the whole thing) with the quality settings at max and the files were small? I recorded 10 minutes and it was 280 megs... lol. I could play it in windvd though. It didn't work in media player for me either... I don't get why it didn't work for you in windvd though. How small is super small?

very small...

like 6 MB.

Maybe it's b/c my cable comes through kinda fuzzy on that channel? I'll try it tonite on a different channel.

Heh, i have the same problem, excpet that the files recorded cause errors on the players that try to play them, heh, i'll try to work on this issue.

No, if you are recording, even crappy reception will take up the same amount of space. You should go into the VCR part of tv studio and go to the setup and look through to see what format and size you've chosen. 6 megs is insanely small... that might just be the audio, lol. Do you just have the tv studio software that came with the 8886?

Yep

All I've got is what came preinstalled. I did install Dscaler, but that didn't effect the TV studio afaik.

Yeah, for some reason, I think it is just the audio. Don't know why/how that would happen though. I've checked the settings multipule times; it just doesn't seem like there's anywhere that I could be going wrong.

Any idea is appreciated. Is there additional software I need to download or an update somewhere?

Oh yeah, I tried other channels and like you guys thought, no dice. Same dang small files. Help!

Any ideas PCTorque? It seems like this problems is software-related, but isn't unique to me.
