No, you can not mix SATA and non SATA in the 9860. Check the review again for a pic I posted showing the bracket and connector/flexprint, you either get an SATA one or a non SATA one and it's one dual connector for both drives. Both connectors can not be used at the same time.

From my understanding, they both need to be SATA or ATA but no mix and matching..

Edit: Oops, Adam beat me to it

Anyone notice the 5690 is no longer on the site? Did they stop carrying it?

EDIT: See Adams reply since he knows more.

NO, the ribbon supports 2 PATA or 2 SATA but not one of each. A different ribbon for PATA and SATA. The plug that goes into Laptop connection is just one plug but the other end has 2 plugs (one for each drive). I don't know if it has both laptop connections one for PATA and one for SATA on the laptop or if it is fixed when you order it.

Hmm, I just can't decide on a proper hard drive configuration, so perhaps someone from this forum, or maybe Adam/Luke could give me some help

If I want to have two hard drives, not in RAID (RAID 0 sounds a little risky for school work), and mostly for working with large files (3dsmax, photoshop, illustrator, video editing etc), would two individual 5400rpm SATA drives out-perform two 7200rpm PATA drives?

I think I've read from one of the earlier posts that a 7200rpm PATA drive would be faster for large files, but I guess that's for a single drive setup only? (I'm assuming that performance would decrease when the 2 drives are competing for the same PATA channel?) So, would the 5400 SATA drives perform better in this scenario?

What are the chances of this unit going on backorder by the end of the week? And if it gets on backorder.. how long do you think it will be so?

Cause I'm a couple hundred short till the end of the week and I really need a laptop for my school work so its basicly. What are the chances of getting this laptop if I order (cash style pay) later this week of receiving early to mid next week?

Two SATA's in this case would be faster when ever you are doing any operation that accesses both drives at the same time as the PATA's will be on the same IDE Channel. SATA write and read requests can take place simultaneously. If you are not doing many file transfers or working with applications that aggressively use both drives at the same time, then stick with PATA. Take note, that if you are using applications that would make heavy use of the paging file on one drive while accessing a file on the other drive, then you may want to stick with SATA.

Thanks a lot. That's great to hear.

God, I want one of these. But I can't afford it, and I want the Athlon 64 version anyways. But there are so many benefits for me...Getting rid of the long walk involved with switching from PC to PS2 gaming for me (TV downstairs), improving the quality of the screen I'm playing both PC and PS2 games on, improving the quality of the computer a hundredfold...

All I can say is that you guys have done a great job in continuing to make the already awesome review better, and it's gone from a "cool computer" to a real pantswetter.

Ah, well. Here's to the hope of a cheaper, faster A64 version with more battery life in six months.

I simply can't get over how much Sager and PC Torque rock.

Wouldn't be so bad if the 915 Chipset supported 64bit Intel Processors... or even the new 1066FSB CPUs....

That is the one and only think holding me back from buying a 9860..

Hello all!(sorry for posting this here, but the sager support section confuses me) I was wondering if anyone could help me out, the 9860 looks pretty damn nice and I've heard that for most Sager products its better to buy from torque, but... everytime I go and configure a 9860 or any other comp on there site, certain things get scrambled. I can never see or select the video card for instance.. the words are all eh... screwy. Theres other stuff too. Any help would be appreciated.

Jim, using a Powerbook G4

No idea what would cause that... The video doesn't have options btw... if it's grayed out, it's suppose to be, because there are no selections there..
Ah, well these are the things that are grayed out

Display
Graphics Card
Modem
Network Card
Floppy Drive

that all the way it should be? and how can you check and see whats there when its grayed out?

Jim
Karosse- All of those items are supposed to be grayed out because they automatically come with the computer and you can't choose from different options. ~ Kray

Ah okay, thanks ^^

I'm sorry...I just gotta laugh at that one...

From what I was told the 915 chipset will support the 1066 fsb chips when they come out. That's why they give you the 533 speed ram in this baby. . .

In theory they will support the Intel 64 bit chips too, but until they have the actual chip they won't know for sure.
