Sager 9860 review - Page 8

Knightofdarkness:

I doubt PCtorque will give an answer on overclocking gpu's due to people cranking them up to high and burning it out. So I would imagine no support for overclock or answer will be given. As far as the ddr3 that I would like to know also.

I would imagine the clevo would just get the gpu then build around it. IE make their own card. So instead of buying the MXM or AXIOM at the store you are locked into buying it directly from sager/clevo due to the different interface. (and I would imagine at a higher price) but this also lets them built it to match specifically what they want and how it works then using OEM form factors.

I'm not quite sure why people are overlooking that, I have basically the same questions...I hope someone gets to yours and mine soon.

I don't see any benchmark for counterstrike source, and I surely don't care that it can displya it at native resolution. What could taht GPU possibly do at 1600x1050? Of course there's no benchmark showing that.

That review makes the laptop look awesome, but how do I/we know it's not just becuase they want to sell the laptop?

I could make an awesome review out of Teenage mutant ninja turtles 3 the movie, and people wouldn't know I lied a bit just to get it to sell.

Where are the real numbers for counterstrike source...I am interested in seeing what this GPU can do with half life 2.

Sheez ELmO...do a little research. Tom's hardware rate the new NVIDIA as 40% better benchmarks than the ATI 9800. Adam said the games all played great except DOOM3 at ultra high settings which stuttered but was playable. What more do you want? If DOOM3 at ultra high is playable there's no way that half life 2 won't be playable.

CS:Source runs great on an 8790 at high-res. The 9860 will eat it up.

Well, it depends on production quantity, but don't forget - this is a very high-end machine that caters to a limited market. I don't see this going on backorder for a while. As enthusiasts, we may feel that this laptop is "the One", but there really aren't that many of us (relatively speaking). The general public will balk at the weight and battery life.

Dont worry about this elmo guy, i have seen him on another forum and he is an ass over there too. Damn rude newb.

Hence the NooB of the week nomination...

Btw, for those in the know (Adam and Luke I guess), will we be able to choose the new ATI card (M28 I think?) for the 9860 when it comes out? Supposedly in a couple of weeks...I think its benchmarks are supposed to be slightly better than the NVIDIA based on the anandtech review. Definitely better for Farcry, most others are comparable. Does NVIDIA have some kind of exclusivity deal with Sager for the first month or two? (or does Dell have dibs on the new card yet again?)

Also...is it possible that WSXGA is better for gaming than WUXGA? Seems like the cards have trouble with performing at WUXGA but work fine at WSXGA.

This machine is so beautiful it makes me cry a little. Can't upgrade for another 6 months though.

Wow, a moderator being rude, speaks a lot for this forum.

Tell me where I've been rude? You haven't seen rude and I don't think you could handle it then.

All of you completely missed the point. Because one person says it's "playable but all in..", define playable? I just told you I'm looking for 50 FPS at 800x600 (or suitable widescreen) res, playable to LOTS of people is 30 FPS - I'm looking for smooth gameplay, not "awesome PQ at choppy Frames".

PS - considering there aren't that many forums that talk about this shit, the only way to find out information is to ask. I would rather be called a newb than the one calling someone a newb, you would know better.

PS 2 - if PCTorque is affiliated with this forum in any way, you have lost them a customer. Be happy!

I'm sure they'll cry...You can always pay an extra grand for a 9860 at Eurocomm or 3 extra grand for the same comp with Voodoo. Fact is that this is the most powerful notebook out there bar none. I said do some research, all the info is one the sager general forum under various threads. You don't have to ask, you can read threads.

Adam did post some benchmarks in his review. But considering the length of the review, he can't be expected to post every little itty bitty thing you want (he does try though.). Tom's hardware did a purely benchmark driven review though he doesn't seem to be a gamer...I mean he doesn't even know that games come out with widescreen support

Just so we're clear...

I'm sure most of you do'nt care about the benchmarks at it's native resolution, how the heck is the GPU going to keep up with 1600x1050 res? What is a downscaled resolution that's similar to 800x600 on a non-wide monitor? How does it look when it's not at native resolution?

The images in the review are from running at native resolution, they aren't what the benchmarks are. How are you running the games at 1024x768 benchmarking on a widescreen laptop? Does the image get stretched?

I do'nt see why people owuld care that the review shows pictures of 1600x1050 when that's not what is being benchmarked (do people care to plya at 10 FPS?) - lol.
This is where you came off as pedant. Assuming that people willing to dish out 3000USD on a gaming machine don't know about framerates or benchmarks and that Adam could be a sheister when he posted both benchmarks and said that the games played great. (I think he just forgot to post the CS:S benchmarks with the others) Check the reseller ratings for PCTorque at www.resellerratings.com before making assumptions like that.

I read the review, maybe you should reread my post. As I stated, the coaxial plugs into the RCA looking adapter. An RCA video line carries only video and not audio. I see no splitter that separates the audio from the video. Therefore, if its an RCA video jack, it won't have the audio on the line anymore.

So is that an RCA jack? Is it something that I don't know about or is there some other solution?

Wait a sec...

I think I get it...

You think he didn't play widescreen, lol!

Okay, yes, the benchmarks are for Native resolutions. I think only DOOM3 didn't support widescreen as mentioned in the review. (Dunno, only read it once) So there you go.

Btw, this still doesn't excuse your lack of tact.

Edit: The actual posted benchmarks were at 1024 resolution. I guess this was to compare with all comps. from the review:

Quote:
All of the above games except Doom 3 (no widescreen support) were run at the native resolution of 1680X1050.
and played perfectly...except DOOM3 which stuttered at ultra-high settings.

The answer was posted immediately after your first post:

Hey guy, don't take life so seriously eh? Stress less ^^ go and open up Warcraft, go online, and spam and backstab your hearts out. Heck, it allways makes me feel better

Edit: My bad, this was in response to the end of page 10. I didn't bother to check and see if there was more... damn you guys write fast!

Maybe I'm not understanding your question, but coaxial cable carries both sound AND video. Presumably, that jack is set up to carry both signals - when the adaptor is plugged into it. In the review, Adam shows how you can run live TV or play an XBox, presumably with sound (wouldn't make much sene to watch TV without sound... ).

Does an XBox not have a coax hookup? If not, then, as has been mentioned by two others, it should have a sound line-out jack that you can then plug into the laptops sound line-in jack.

Clear as mud?

Sorry you feel that way, we're not here to farm customers so buy whatever from wherever you want and don't try and hold it in our face because that's not why we're here. The mods are nominated in by members and current mods and admin so they represent no company and think on their own free will. We will have their backs and trust their decisions.

ATI
Anyways, the ATI everyone is asking about... it's clearly getting hype as with all rumored releases. I doubt anyone would deny ATI has something in the works that may be announced in weeks and may be on sites as options in laptops around then or weeks later. As far as when people will actually begin seeing a new ATI mobile card shipping in a system I don't see it being possible within the next month, maybe over a month, maybe over two months. I am confident any new graphics card will of course be an option with Sager as they have no ties to any one of the two that keeps them from the other. Now, if ATI is working on a deal like they did with Dell on the 9800 where they had a 30 day exclusive Dell only release I have no idea. I don't know how well that worked out for them and if they would want to do it again. I don't agree with a company talking a supplier/manufacturer into holding a product from their competitors, but it's part of the free business world.

Benchmark Resolutions
OK, drop the conspiricy theory for a second on why we benchmarked at non-native resolutions yet took screen shots @ native. The reason for it is:
1) Many of the benchmarks don't even run at the native resolution of the LCD
2) We were comparing it to other systems including a 5690 so the pool of systems was more limited by what it could handle and the resolutions they could run.
3) Most major reviews are not done at a WSXGA+ native resolution so any chance someone would try and compare would be wiped.
4) The CRTs we were benching the desktops on were cheap 1280X1024 max res displays.

I took the screenshots and described the gameplay. Now, you can think I'm a stuffy businessman trying to make a buck talking like a gamer and have no idea what real gameplay is, but many will tell you different. I game many hours every day and have for years, if there's anything in this world I know a lot about it's smooth gameplay and what people are going to consider playable. I played all those games @ native and made my comments. Many FPS games true gamers are NOT going to run at the native resolution because they will have an aim disadvantage. I personally run Tribes Vengeance @ 1280 X 960 and adjusted my FOV so it wasn't stretched. The reason I and most real gamers don't play most high res is because it throws off many things such as your recticle, text, and your opponent's rendered size. Yes, I could run a WSXGA+ res but would I be owning like this in a recent match we played?

Does my sig not tell you I may game a bit from time to time? lol

When I game I bring it and I expect results and a system that isn't going to hold me back no matter what I throw at it. If the system lacked in any way in any of those games even @ native, you would have read about it because trust me I was looking for anything to knock this system for and not look biased.
