It is definetely still upgradable. Just go take a look at:

It is the same notebook (minus some aesthetic changes).

Guys... of course it is from the same ODM. Clevo designed it and made it and then they just sell it to people like Sager, Hypersonic PC, Eurocom, Alienware, Voodoo, etc...

Then they add their little fancy paint jobs or alien eyes, or tatoos, etc, and name claim to have the most powerful laptop ever.

What you have to look at is price, warranty, customer support, etc.

Here is a link to a comment by Luke on that, as Craig said "Yep"

Its lost its complete sexyness, im gonna keep this current one. Oh well, Alienware still kicks ass.

As far as the complaining about the weight of the system goes, here's my response. If you want a light laptop with good battery life, get a Centrino system. These are supposed to be DESKTOP REPLACEMENTS. In fact, the new Area 51 is excatly what I am looking for in a laptop. I want a powerhouse syatem that I can take with me when I game at LAN parties or other people's houses. I do not want to lug around a Desktop case and a monitor. Even with one of those small cube cases and an LCD, it's still more than I want to carry around. In my opinion, the new 51-m is PERFECT.

This is what has me a little

Before, to me, alienware represented power + beauty... at a good price, with great customer support/warranty. This was something that you couldnt get from other places...

But now, they are just power + good price, withgreat customer support/warranty.

We always knew, that sager = power w/ a real ugly notebook and that AW was beauty + power... however, there really isnt much to distinguish AW from all the other clevo/sager selling places.

I doubt that AW doesnt know that their notebooks are popular, to an extent, because of their aesthetic values...

For me, it's not so much an issue of the weight, but the size of a 17" screen, but that's totally personal preference on my part. If the new 51m had an optional 15.4" screen, I might be regretting buying when I did, but I just do not want a 17" laptop. That's just me, though - I almost always sit with my laptop actually in my lap, so the 17" would just feel really awkward and ungainly.

What if all we want is something that is about the size of the current/Uniwill A51, with a better video card?

I think the jump from the current uniwill model to this one, might be too big for some people.

Unfortunately that is in the hands of the ODM. Hopefully they will release a smaller model without all of the extra features so there is more choice.

Do you think they will just stick with this particular model, or do you think they will also release something more like the current A51 (something not that big and heavy)?
I think its great to see them releasing this laptop. This design has proven to be quite stable and worthy in its past incantations.

What will be interesting to see is what happens with the current lineup of laptops. I don't see AW abandoning the 15" screens as many enthusiasts are 4:3 aspect-only type personalities (raises hand).

And let's not forget...they're working on something that will be labeled ALX in a laptop. (drools!)

I'm also curious to see (man this hurts to say) what Dell's answer will be. Since Clevo has obviously backing nVidia with this unit, Dell may have something equally as cool with the ATi Axiom chipset coming.

Either way you chalk it up, its a great time to be an Enthusiast!

Wonder how many minutes it will run off the battery?

My money is on 45 seconds, but if I bought this laptop it wouldn't be for the battery life.

well i just bought the new 51m and for me the weight wont be an issue. the vid card is what made the decision when it came to lappy or desktop. i was going to go with a desktop untill this beast released this morning. now i just get to wait and wait oh and wait some more. did i mention waiting. ryan

It uses MXM graphics which means all you have to do is take the memory chip out and swap it with a better one to have better graphics. You dont have to switcht he graphics card
post #36 of 266
I am only disappointed in the size, AW could of knocked off the dual optical drive/hard drive, and made it thinner and weigh a little less. But I cannot wait to see the benchmarks for that, XPS = OWNED!!!
about 9000 on 3dmark03 if ya get my drift

They way it is going with these desktop replacements makes me think we'll see a 9600 or 9700 in a thin and light soon!!! (comeon alienware, take the hint!!!) I love the color of this new lappy!!!
