I will be doing some odd things with my laptop that would make RAID very advantageous to me, however if it is going to cause it to crash because the laptop gets jostled(Which will happen a LOT in backstage theater where I work) then it will not be worth the performace for me. Integrity of my data when I dont have any means of backing it up for months at a time is essential to me. I understand that I could do a redundant raid, and may very well end up doing that, but I really like the ability to do a striped system.
Just as background info I would be running Linux, and under linux VMware so I could run Windows as needed for specific programs such as AutoCad, Audition, and Protools, along with any proprietary sound interface programs. That is why I think striping could really make a difference for me, since I have been told the choke point for VMWare is in fact that HD access if you have enough memory(I have decided I will be ordering 2 Gigs of memory no matter what, that should more than cover me)
I would use Raid in a heartbeat on my desktop if I had a need and controller to
