Is there a major difference in performance between the 128MB 9700 and 256MB 9800? I'm thinking of upgrading but only if it offers a REAL difference in performance

I've had mine shipped for days now, but its the "install" that shipped.

Of this month. The company I work for is a Dell Premier Partner and our orders are handled a bit differently.

You're right. There are two product codes. The first shipping confirmation you receive is for the Dell technical service.

This has been my argument for an easy refund if you choose to self install the card, as Dell themselves split out the cost as a separate product. If you don't use the "product", then you're returning it and they have no choice but to offer up the refund.

Either way, no one should get too excited when they see that first confirmation, it's a dud, and now you should start receiving repeated calls from the third party tech! You don't even have the damn card yet!

Whats even better is that when you cancel the install, you get ANOTHER order that ships and its for a -1 quantity of the install. So now for my card order I have 3 orders, 1 for the card, 1 for 1 install, and 1 for -1 install. 2 have shipped....the 2 useless ones.

Yeah, but that last "shipped" order is the refund of the install costs. That's a good one.

Even though my card isn't scheduled to ship until 12/07/2004, I've received a call from the local Dell affiliate to install it. I told them I cancelled the install since the card wouldn't be here until December. They just said "o.k." and hung up.

in the xps configuring components page, there was a note next to the mr9800 saying "this option might delay your shipping day". It was there for more than two weeks. But when I check that page again tonight, that note is gone.....i think our mr9800s will come real soon.

Dude, you're killing me! There are two or three wonderful threads discussing the issue of installing the 9800 card and receiving refunds on the tech service. You've already received as much info as you need on your own thread What's the deal with the MR9800?, where you questioned whether I had actually installed the card before calling Dell for a refund on the installation service! Maybe you should ask one of the moderators to help you set up a poll looking for the most popular way to receive a refund on the tech service of your 9800 card! You can poll on five choices:

- Called Dell and asked for customer service
- Chatted online with Dell customer service
- Wrote a letter to Dell customer service
- Sent a prayer to God for help with Dell customer service
or
- Drove directly to Dell customer Service and Napalmed them!

Just keep your three year warranty intact and let one of the tech dudes do it for you. I recommend at least reading your manual on the installation procedure so you can keep one eye on your Pepsi and one eye on the tech!

I don't want to play Halflife and NFS Underground 2 till I get my new card and the wait's killing me

Yeah, I'm exactly like you man. I've been holding off getting HL 2 till I get my card to.


Ordered mine on the 5th, ship prep is Dec. 8th. ARGH ...wait's killing me.

I was able to get a 25% off code from the Dellf girl to apply towards the $399 price, bringing it down to $299. I had a $100 customer satisfaction coupon they gave me since I tried to purchase a 9100 on their outlet website and as I was checking out they updated their sofware and lost out on the specific laptop. This brings my total to $199. It appears that the installation price you can get back is always %25 of the cost you paid. My installation charge that has already shipped is $50. Therefore after I call and get my installation cancelled I should get the card for around $150.

When did everyone cancel their installation charge, before or after the card itself shipped? I was thinking of waiting until after the card shipped and then cancelling the install.

I cancelled it after I installed it. I figured, if I flubbed up, I could piece it back together with the 9700 and let the tech have a go at it as a back up. The key is to make sure the dust free bag it comes in is in mint condition and the tape fold that holds the bag down to itself is in near mint condition as well
