Compaq R3000 CATASTROPHE!

I turned on my R3000 the other night, and I got a DOS Prompt that told me there was something wrong with my Ethernet LAN, and to check the cable. My laptop wasn't plugged into anything at the time, so I was very confused. I tried the usual keyboard commands: enter, esc, ctrl alt delete, etc. but with no success. I called my buddy Niel, the tech support guy in India, & he had me run through some tests in the Bios. The problem was worse than I ever anticipated...

The computer isn't recognizing my hard drive!!!

Windows won't boot, the os disk does nothing, my computer is a vegetable. Neil said all he can do is send me new hard drive. He also said I might be able to stick my existing hard drive in a different machine & extract my data. I have a lot of...um..."unregistered" data on there, and I can't afford to have my machine confiscated and/or reported. I'm a small business man as well as a student, and not having access to those files is costing me money and grades. Any thoughts (or preferably solutions)?

Be glad to help.. Data transfer is easy w/USB drive and hard drive adapter. You will need a new hard drive prior though. Get the OS re-installed and go from there. I'd try running PM on it first to see if the drives viewable through it. (Partition majic) if you need help just yell. Your programs and data are safe w/us..

Try removing your hdd, turn it on and allow to post. Then, put the drive back in and power on... check BIOS to ensure AUTO config is set for IDE.
If none of that works, there are adapters to connect notebook hdds to desktop computers or external usb enclosures... find some way to extract what you need and grab a new drive.

I turned on my computer today, & it mysteriously booted up fine. I have done nothing to it since the incident, so now I'm really confused. I think there's a loose screw in my machine or something.
