news: complete desktop replacement

Not necessarily sager news but interesting to see the direction some companies are heading:

http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/Ar...ages=04&seq=19

excerpt:
"According to the company, it will use desktop CPUs, motherboards, graphics cards, hard drives and memory. Consequently, the mobile PC will be heavier and larger than existing mobile PCs. Including the battery, it will weigh seven kilograms and measure 52mm in thickness. Mobile PCs now on the market weight about 3-4 kilograms..."

You thought the 8886 was heavy I believe this will weigh in at about 15lbs with a 17" screen

it kind of seems like a step backwards ... ...

The difference between 12 pounds for the 8886 and the 15 pounds for this proposed model seems small to me. I'm twice as big as most people, so my laptop can weigh twice as much and it won't bother me. Color me extremely interested, especially at that price point. With desktop components, every laptop bottleneck is effectively eliminated. As long as the graphics card is swappable with a Radeon 9700, I'm in.

And the Sager is actually thicker, which seems odd when you have to cram a desktop hard drive in the thing. Plus, they're going to have to put the world's largest battery in the thing to get even a half hour of time away from a/c. I'm thinking they're measuring without accounting for the screen, while the Sager is measuring with the screen down.

I'm just curious to see how it looks. I just can't see how all those components will fit. Desktop components aren't exactly shrinking.

Add me to the list of the curious. The price/performance should be terrific compared to most desktop replacement notebooks. And yeah, the battery solution should be interesting. Maybe it will have one of those methanol fuel cells

I'm looking at my 3 year old flat bed scanner and imagining it as a laptop

Once they come out, maybe PCTorque can get himself set up as a reseller and corner the market on monster lappies

A true desktop replacement. I both agree and disagree with the statement that it is a "step backwards." The step forward is a universal compatibility. The step backward is giving up all the efforts to mobilize.

I think it's a great idea, though. I hope it will also allow users to upgrade the thing. Maybe even build.

Eyy, that'd be cool; building your own laptop. It's possible now, but only if you got a soldering gun and blowtorch. (Yeah, exaggeration.)

Whether its a step forward or backward, it's still a step, and somehow, I think it's a step in the right direction.

But they're both Clevo...how can one have higher specs?
Because BSI only offers the 2.4 ghz version with 400mhz FSB, sagers currently have the 2.8ghz, not to mention other specs, and they do not allow more than 512mb RAM, and they do not sell them with a second hard drive.
I think thats what he meant.

I'm kinda glad they'll focus on foreign (for those of us in the U.S.) markets so that these new things can get practical testing and use... at the same time, it sucks that we don't get to see the thing until later, lol. Works the same way with Japanese cars, lol.
