Asus m6bne Vs. Dell 8600

Thread Starter
This is my first laptop and I've narrowed it down to the Asus m6bne vs. the Dell 8600. I will be using the laptop for business (spreadsheets, word, powerpoint, research on web, burining cd's) with some light to moderate gaming. I'll be traveling with it 2-3 times a week.

Key Specs:

1.6-1.7 PM
WXGA (old eyes)
1 stick 512
60 gb @7200
64mb 5200/128/9600(dELL) or 64/9700 (Asus)

Dell's systems tend to be cheaper by $200.

My question: is the Asus worth the premium in the long run considering this laptop will also be replacing my desktop. I'm looking for the best combination of power, performance, reliablity and customer service. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have had these models side by side. The dell looks nice- until you put it next to the m6, then it looks and feels really cheap. Very flexy, chintzy looking in comparison, at least- my opinion.

I think the M6 is a way better choice- much more reliable hardware.

I've also owned both, and the Asus is better in all ways that count - from looks to performance to build quality.

Thanks for the input. Can anyone comment on the quality of the Asus screen and the viewing angles. I have never seen an m6bne in person.
Overal screen quality is very good. The vertical angles could have been a bit better but as they are now I would rate them as good - for sure they are better than those of a 4:3 monitor. As for the horizontal angles - excellent is the best way to describe them. No problem for three or more people to watch a movie on the laptop.

The viewing angles are great. I was very surprised actually. I can stand on the side of the laptop looking straight over the keyboard and the screen is still clear in my side vision.

I have a WSXGA screen on my Asus and had the same resolution on my 8600 (and a Dell D800 incidentally). The contrast and brightness were better with the Asus, with the 8600 showing a bit too much light leakage for my liking.

As mentioned above the vertical angles are pretty good. Better than the Dell screens. Horizontal is very good.

Overall the screen is very nice, although not as good as some of the enhanced screens like the Sony Xbrites.

An Asus M6n with an enhanced WSXGA screen would be, IMHO, the perfect laptop.

What ever happened to ordering them from Australia?

Is there any way to rip off the screen from a Sager 3790 and stick it on the Asus. - You got peanut butter on my chocolate.

No reason not to buy from Australia. It's really no different from ordering mail order from the States, just $30-50 more in shipping. The warranty is international 2 years so you're covered there.

I'd contact this guy:

Hi

If any of you yankees are still wanting to buy and import an ASUS M6Ne with 15.4" WSXGA tax free from Australia I am a computer reseller here. Just email me at martin@yestech.com.au for prices, specs and shipping and tell me what prices you have and where from and I will do my best to beat them. I am a registered business owner in Australia, my company is YesTech Australia Pty Ltd (Australian Company Number ACN 109 592 323). I can supply most other brands of notebooks as well. Any queries just email and I promise to respond within a day!

Cheers

sf, how did you get that guy's info? Did he post that somewhere here on the forums?

For business, definitely the ASUS.

It looks 100x more professional than any dell. And is nearly as powerful as a 8600

NEARLY as powerful as an 8600? How do you figure it isn't MORE powerful?

Yep, the Yestech guy posted at the end of my review of the M6. It's in the reviews forum.

Agree with Kronus, the Asus is a pure DTR high-performance laptop disguised as a business notebook. Its slim and stylish looks and the light weight can fool people very easily - the Polywell, yet another Asus barebone builder, is the most powerful laptop ever tested by PCWorld scoring 98 on WolrdBench5, given that these benchmarks are a criteria for power, more than any other Dothan, AMD, or P4 laptop. The 8600 was also tested along with the PolyWell but scored less, and both were equipped with 2.0 Dothan, same RAM, same verything else, not sure what the gpus were.

Dell is offering a 25% off coupon today with some other free upgrades. I'm just ignoring it, going away for the weekend and purchasing my Asus on Monday (once I decide on a reseller). Hopefully this fan issue will be resolved shortly as well. (I will ask them to check temps before delivery.)

I am really not sure what is the reason for this fan-setings issue with the Asus. I suggest, given that you live in the US, you purchase your laptop from ChemUSA - ChemBook 2060e - because this is where I got mine and I have never had any problems with it. they also use Shin Etsu for the thermal paste which is rumoured to be even better than AS5. DiscountLaptops is the reseller I got the ChemBook from. Powernotebooks are another great on-line store for the Asus M6BNe. These two are PROVEN stores while I can't tell you anything about the rest.

The shin etsu comes standard from asus. It's like really hard putty, (and really hard to get off if you want to put on AS5, lol.) I read stuff about it being better than AS3, but I couldn't find any more recent material so I ended up going with the AS5.

On a side note, shinza is backordered again I wanted to spend my money, but they won't let me BO til dec 15 for large black 15' I really need this thing too.

Same here, I got my laptop from discountlaptops (Chembook 2060e for me) and the temperatures have always been perfectly fine in comparison to those posted here. Highly recommended
