Received my 4760 a few days ago...

First of all, let me say "wow" that's an awesome machine. It lives up to all the hype and then some.

A few non-technical observations:

The AC adapter is huge and heavy. At the same time, though, it is very rugged and worthy of travel. It's not flimsy like a few others I've had. Would be nice if it was a few feet longer.

The feel of the keyboard is great. It's quiet and firm and has a very good feel.

The computer is not as noisy as I feared it would be. It's not silent by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not unbearable.

The case is worthless. It might as well be a paper bag.

Shipping - the computer came in a fairly padded box inside of a box. There was minimal damage to the box, but it didn't impact the contents. My previous computer was a Gateway and it had a more substantial case with considerably more padding.

Chassis - compared to the Gateway, the chassis of the Sager is far superior. It feels rugged without looking "industrial." The tray for the DVD/CD drive feels more sturdy as well.

Jacks - although trivial, it would be nice to have some sort of cover for all of the jacks on the back of the chassis. The WinBook I had in the past had this and it came in handy. Since I work in the desert, I'm concerned with dust getting where it doesn't belong.

Software - the video/DVD software came up as "expired" the first time I opened it. I tried to watch a DVD just to make sure the DVD player works and I couldn't because of the expired software.

Shipping part two - no tracking number was provided until I called and asked for it. Just a minor glitch in the system, but when I have to take a day off of work to sign for the package, it helps to know when it will arrive.

Shipping part three - no signature was required. I find that very odd.

Shipping part four - the package was sent from Florida on the 11th and arrived on the 15th. It seems like a long time for 2nd-day air.

Invoice - I find it odd that there was no DETAILED invoice included with the package. This is probably because every other computer I have purchased has had one and this one did not.

Integrated camera - works well. I only used it for a couple of minutes to make sure it works, but it worked fine. Now there is one less item for me to carry when I travel.

Manual - the typical manual. A few typos.

Chassis part two - there were a few scratches on the lid when I took it out of the plastic bag.

Battery - I appreciate that the battery was fully charged when I received the computer. A definite plus. So far the battery life has been about 1:45:00 while running online software and basic MS Office applications.

Any questions???

Sounds pretty good and glad to hear you like it. Be sure to keep us posted on any other impressions/situations that come up.

Enjoy!

Just a question... Not having anything to do with the laptop. You said you live in the Desert? And have bad dust? What steps do you take to keep your electronics working with all the dust? I have a real bad dust problem also, and actually use a air compressor to clean my computers every month, I still have dust related problems though. I'm actually very concerned about getting a laptop because of it.

Anyways, glad to hear you got your laptop and like it. Not glad to hear about the shipping, but if it got there safely... Guess it's ok.

Has this been resolved? This sounds pretty serious -- I would certainly hate to hear that I need to go out and buy software for a new laptop just so that I can watch movies on it.

That is standard UPS/FEDEX B.S. They never count weekends on their quotes for overnight, 2-day, or 3-day shipping. The 11th was a friday, so forget the 12th and 13th, the first day (overnight) would have been the 14th and the 15th was in fact the 2nd day.

Just be glad you didn't opt for ground shipping to California I ordered my 4760 on the 28th of June, it shipped from Sager on the 8th of July, then shipped out from PCTorque on the 11th and I still have not received it yet as of the 17th!!! According to UPS it should show up sometime on the 18th, although it spent all day today at a UPS center only a 30 minute drive from its final destination -- that doesn't allow customer pickups! I have grown to hate UPS. Had I realized that Sager was going to start shipping a day late, that PCTorque was going to ship from CA->FL by 3-day-select instead of 2-day (as their website claims), and that UPS ground was going to take a FULL 7 DAYS, I would have ordered differently, as I wanted it by my birthday on the 16th

PICS!

Of every last part would sure be appreciated.

When you say noise - what kind of noise from where?

Thanks!

I've seen WINDVD do that with new systems before. All you have to do is uninstall it and reinstall it using the code on the CD sleeve and it will be fine.

I really don't do anything special. I just try to make sure that I don't leave it out if I don't have to. Once I'm finished using it, I put it in the case. I also use compressed air frequently to keep it as clean as possible.

The noise is from the cooling fan and the CD/DVD drive. On some computers I have owned, this noise is quite annoying. On the Sager, it's tolerable.

Probably the Friday the 11th thing, and weekends don't count. I tracked my shipment to my hometown on a Friday, at least a day or two ahead of the 2nd day air. Not only would they NOT deliver it before it was due, they could\would NOT even get it out of the container it was stored in for my personal pickup. I had to wait until the "2nd" day (business day). This was with Fedex, and not due to anything PC Torque did.

EDIT: Oops, I see this is a repeat response similar to someone elses. Sorry.

The envy is slaying me.

Be a good pal and post every single little thing - pics if possible but all reactions to noise, any glitches, issues, everything!

You have the internal WIFI? Hows the range and reception?

Is the power supply REALLY loud?

Envy!

I received my 4760 last Tuesday. I love the machine. This is the 5th Sager I've owned, and I've liked each one of them.

The 4760 is everything it promised to be. The screen is much brighter than my 8886, and the sound is also much better. I bought the subwoofer option with an external USB 6 in 1 reader. Even with the subwoofer, it still sounds like a laptop though.

The keyboard feels good, and is easy to use. I've burned a DVD with it already, and it worked just fine.

I like how thin the computer is, yet it seems very solid. The screen doesn't wobble like some of the other laptops I've seen out there (Toshiba, Gateway).

I ordered mine without an operating system, but I was able to install XP Professional with no problems, and all the drivers, and software provided work fine. This is a miracle for me because, I know just enough about computers to be dangerous. However, I didn't have the usual start-up frustrations with the 4760.

I'm glad I paid the extra money and bought the Targus Back Pack. It's a tight fit because the 4760 is so wide, but it works just fine.

My only complaint, and it's a very minor one, the firewire port is in the front. I felt it would have been better if it were on the side of the computer.

Unlike most of you, I didn't buy my computer from PCTorque. I bought it from Discount Laptops in Las Vegas. By the time I found this forum, I had already decided to buy from Discount Laptops, and stuck with the decision since I had a couple of conversations with them about the 4760 on the phone. They were always very responsive, annd were quick to answer any questions I had.

Bottom line: The 4760 is worth every penny I paid for it!

Still installing the OS, so I don't have much to report, except that it is really pretty

Went into the BIOS first to enable HyperThreading and check all the settings. Anyone have thoughts on the ideal AGP aperature? I set mine to 128MB for now...

Took a while to format the drive, but now the OS is nearly done installing. When the main fans are not blowing, it is reallly quiet. In fact, it is just a little bit quieter than my Dell Inspiron 5000. When the fan turns on (which during installation has been everytime it reboots and every few minutes) it is noisier, but not unbearably so. I don't have a Db meter handy or I would tell you exactly how noisy

Once I get all the drivers installed, etc, I will post more...

128 or 256 will probably be the best settings. BTW, Sager is expecting enough next week to fill all current orders.

Display is absolutely breathtaking. No dead pixels. This is quite a relief after 3 years of staring at a stuck blue pixel on my 15" Dell Inspiron 5000.

The brightness is very impressive so far, although I haven't looked at it in sunlight yet. The contrast is very good -- better than many displays I have looked at. If I can find a good utility to do more quantitative tests with, I will post the results.

Driver installation has been troublefree, although I forgot to grab the latest drivers off of Sager's site before installing off the CD, so I had to re-install most of the hardware drivers.

The built-in 802.11b has better reception than my external Linksys wi-fi card. In fact, it works so well, I haven't gotten around to trying the wired network port.

The bottom of the case gets quite hot, as does the area at the top of the keyboard by the screen. Fortunately, I planned ahead and bought a laptop desk from Lapworks, Inc., which works quite well.

More later...

When you "maximize" a web page on the 17" screen, does it stretch out the whole page to fit the screen? Or does it maximize the screen to the size of a normal 4:3 aspect?
