Re: Lan Issue on Compaq x1000

Alrighty then couple of things.

1) Does the road runner dsl have any software you need to load - many of the dsl services do.
2) Does it assign an IP through DHCP (if there is no software this is likely) If so you need to make sure your machine is set to use DHCP in te network settings.
3) Make sure your IE settings on the new machine are like those on the old - one of the biggest PITA'es of microsoft is that IE ships without the connection stuff set up - I have no idea why but its MS and its a hunk of ****e.

Those are the first 3 I would check.

Also if the connection is active - open up a command console and run

ipconfig

and then run a pin to some site like www.yahoo.com and see if packets come back.

Command console?From where?Where is located?

Also sometimes know as the dos prompt - I dunno if you are running xp you may not even be able to bring one up - just another way MS is taking away your control of your own OS.

Well, I believe Cable modem and DSL have the similar connection. You don't need any software/password to get connected. I can plugin my laptop to the cable modem at my friend house without any problem.
The only thing you need to do to make it work is... after you plug your Computer into the DSL you need to reset the DSL(unplug the power cable and wait for 30sec then plug it back).
Hope it work out for you....

1394 (Firewire LAN) is not a problem.... but you can disable them if you want to (I disable mine).

I have a suggestion. I was having a similar problem a while ago with my cable Internet service. Sometimes the ISP configures the modem to only recognize the MAC address of the machine that is there when they install the service. Your old machine has a MAC address of say X and the modem recognizes this. The other computer has a MAC address of Y, and it isn't recognized. There are a 2 solutions for this. First, if you have a cable/dsl router such as a linksys, you can go into the router and copy the MAC address from the old machine into the router. Second, if you don't have a router, you will need to find out how to change the MAC address that the modem recognizes. You can call the dsl provider, or you can check the manuals of the modem to see if this can be done by yourself. Most likely the modem is from the provider so you will have to speak to them.

Luckily I have a router and I just spoofed the old MAC address into the router config, and it worked. Good luck!

being hooked up to your ethernet between the computer and model (or router/switch) is not the same as being on the internet.

The ethernet connected icons (if you're looking at the screen i think you're looking at) simply means that your NIC is working and cable is plugged into at either end.

For my dsl connection, I need to tell windows to create a new connection - the wizard should be available from view network connections screen.
(I know, its an ms wizard, but it's not completely crap).

If you didn't get any software (common with xp as it has the standard pppoe software needed for dsl) then you probably just need to tell it to use them. The wizard should ask all the right questions to get the info out of you.

IPCONFIG /RELEASE

GO TO A COMMAND PROMPT

IF IT SAYS SOMETHING LIKE
C:\WIndows\My documents then type cd <enter> until you get to C:\

THEN TYPE IPCONFIG /RELEASE (INLCUDE THE SPACE)

THEN TYPE IPCONFIG /RENEW

THIS SHOULD SOLVE IT

ALSO UNPLUG YOUR CABLE MODEM AND WAIT 30 SECS THEN REPLUG.

I don't have DSL but i do have cable and when ever i change from one computer or an other or hook up an router i have to call my cable provider and they have to reset the modem on their computers might want to give that a try. Its a real pain when ever we have a LAN.
