Thread Starter
i just got my 8600 today

im not sure what is happening but the dvd burner on the laptop doesnt open everytime i press the button, only after removing it from the modular bay and then opening does it open

this has happened when i try installing a 2 disc game, i put the first disc in and install, its asks for the next disk, but then when i go to open the drive it just doesnt open

im not sure if this is a hardware fault, or is there some sort of powersaving mechanism which turns the drive off

any help will be appreciated

Do you have the Sonic DVD software installed. I've heard this can cause problems with the tray not ejecting .. If so try uninstalling it to see if that fixes your problem.

I had the same prob with my new XPS using Sonic on the Sony 8x double layer drive. After a format and install using xp service pack 1, not pack 2, the problem is gone. I`m still running the Sonic software, just not xp service pack 2.

This problem is normally caused by Sonic's DLA .. If you reinstalled you might not have loaded it back on your computer ..

By default I avoid Sonic's products as I think they are crap ..

Quote:
What is DLA?

DLA makes it easy to record data to optical media. DLA allows your optical drive to appear just like any other drive volume.

In other words, your drive handles files just like a hard disk or floppy disk. Using Windows Explorer you can drag & drop, rename, move or "delete" files and directories right on your optical drive.

You can use the "SAVE AS" command in your spreadsheet, word processor, or other application to save files directly to optical media.
Here are some issues
Quote:
Are there any software compatibility issues with DLA and 3rd Party applications?

If 3rd Party applications use the device in which DLA uses to write to the media, drive contention issues will exist and could result in a device being inaccessible by DLA. These applications include other drive letter software applications and mastering applications.

Sonic is aware of drive contention issues with the following applications but is not limited to this list:
Nero Burning ROM
Nero InCD
Roxio Easy CD Creator
Roxio DirectCD
NTI CD Maker Pro
NTI FileCD
InterVideo WinDVD
Cyberlink PowerDVD
These applications should be disabled prior to using DLA or vice versa.
