How do you run different operating systems on one pc using VMs?

How would it be possible to run 2 or 3 operating systems on 1 PC? I would have a diff HDD for each OS, but I don't know if I need software etc so that I can boot to the different disks. Any1 ever do this?

Sure. You can do it that way. If all the HD are connected to one controller, you can modify which channel is the primary channel in the BIOS. The system will then boot from the HD configured as the primary channel. If they are connected to different controllers, the BIOS provides options for choosing which controller is first checked for bootable OS as well. Of course, this is a rather cumbersome way to do it.

If you have a beefy enough machine and $200, VMWare is a great piece of software. It allows you to run "Virtual" machines from one "host" OS. I use VMWare at work for testing software, patches, critical updates, scripts, etc.

VMWare supports virtual networking...
You should be able to simulate the environment, to a point.

VMWare has three options for networking:
Bridged: where it gets an IP from your production network and appears as if it is ON the production network.
NAT: Where VMWARE runs a virtual DHCP server on a private, virtual network. Your virtual machines will have access to the production network, but be invisible from outside, as if they were behind a firewall.
Virtual ONLY: The virtual machines exist ONLY in a virtual environment.

These settings can be changed at anytime, so you can mess around and fiddle with things as needed.

I have run a Microsoft SMS Server on 2000 Server, as well as an XP Client PC simultaneously, in a virtual environment on my work PC (2.4GHz 1GB RAM 120GB Dell GX270).

The short answer is: you CAN do what you described.

how much is VMware? I saw a price of like $3000, which is ridiculous.... I could build another comp and hook it up using pvm for less.....

VMWare Workstation is all you need. It is right around $200. VMWare also makes some server products - there is now a large push toward virtual servers in Production environments - You purchase the highest capacity server you can, and run several servers on one machine, rather than spending all the extra money on individual servers.
