touchpad dead then keyboard then touchpad then touchpad

Ok got the laptop back from Sager with a new system board I was happy. I fired it up and it worked perfectly. I played around a bit no problems. Closed the lid when back to programming my PLC and later opened up to check something.... touchpad wouldn't work . So I used the keyboard to restart the computer. The mouse worked but the keyboard didn't After several power cycles everything was back to normal. But know it seems when ever I put the blasted thing to sleep either the touchpad or the keyboard don't work. I've got some keyboard reset errors and timeouts for I8042prt.sys (keyboard mouse driver). I know think there was nothing wrong with the old system board and it was the :crappy: bug ridden OS all along.

So, my questions
1. Anybody else running Wink Professional SP3 having these problems?

2. Anybody running XP having any problems

I fear I may have to go out and buy <gasp> a copy of XP. Who's got the cheapest price?

Sorry to hear. I've only came across 1 real "bug" with the OS and it WAS Win2K with the touchpad. A customer called Microsoft and with his setup on his 8886, Microsoft confirmed the bug according to him if I understood it correctly. Have you tried it without SP3? I sent him an email with the link to your post. Maybe he can shed some light on what happened in his case.
I would try XP if you have a copy of one to try out. Check www.pricewatch.com for the best prices on an OEM copy of Windows.

no problems with XP

I've had the same issue with XP SP1 and Win2K SP3. Recovery from standby causes the keyboard and the touchpad to stop working. Then I've got to press and hold the power button and reboot.

I've just reloaded Win2K (only) from scratch, so I'll see if that works any better. Unfortunately, I've got applications that require at least SP2 for Win2K.

I'll keep watch of this thread for updates. Thanks.

Let me just say that I hate the standby feature on any computer. My desktop printer dies after it's put on standby and the cd-rw spontaneously turns out worthless disks only if the computer had been on standby.... I therefore never use it with any computer I have, lol. I used it once today with the sager and the USB ports stopped working, lol, my optical mouse turned off, but I hadn't reinstalled the drivers after I repair installed XP. I've never had a computer work from standby at 100%... something always gets smacked up when the computer cuts power without turning off, lol, which is essentially what standby is.

There's a registry key for USB hotplugging that might help the standby issue for USB.

HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\i8042prt\paramters
Value: Headless
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0x1

It didn't help me though.

I tried it again last night with my 8886 running Win2K SP3. It worked fine.
I'm thinking it may have something to do with my Wi-Fi card
and drivers then (which I haven't installed again yet).
Hmmmm....

I haven't run Windows update yet either, so I'm missing approximately 40MB worth
of "newer" software (IE 6 SP1, Media Player 7.1, DirectX 8.1b, etc.)

I'll try to keep track of where I find 'standby' failing.

With mine it took a few power cycles before the mouse problem showed up initialy. It's definately a driver issue and I'm thinking it may have something to do with SP3. I wonder if I grabbed an older version of I8042prt.sys if it would work?

Worst case scenario I'll have to ghost my partition back to get it work if I screw it up.

Possible Solution

I talked to Sager and they acknowledge a problem with both the 888 and 56x models, but not all laptops are exhibiting the problems. Odd. They've been talking to Clevo about a possible solution. Here's what I suggested they try and so far it's worked on my 888 even when coming out of standby mode.

The problem appears to be related to a bug within the i804prt.sys file. This the Windows driver for the mouse/PS/2 ports. The problem appeared after installing SP3 which was supposed to fix a previous problem with the driver but apparently created a new one.

So, what I've done is replaced the SP3 version of i8042prt.sys with the version on the install CD. The file is located in the i386 directory of the CD. To replace the old file you'll need to open up a DOS window and use the expand program to uncompress it.

Expand i8042prt.sy_ c:\winnt\system32\i8042prt.sys should do it.

Also, if you're getting event messages saying something to the effect that the driver timeout out or something like that. Open up Regedit and increase the value for the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
Change the value for PollingIterations
This will make windows wait longer after it polls the keyboard/mouse before giving up.

I also uninstalled the Touchpad drivers and installed the new ones on the Clevo site. This version doesn't exhibit the wrong control panel extension type message.

Good Luck.

Well, I've tried all kinds of combinations, and I can't get it to freeze up after standby... yay for me, I guess

Beakmyn: Glad to hear you've found some resolution to the problem.
