Is Staroffice as powerful as Office2003 ??

I need a cost effective productivity suite, and was looking at my options .. openoffice seems limited but i'll go with it should i take linux .. but anyway as of now i'm running windows xp professional .. hence .. staroffice is cheaper .. but will it work as well as office2003 on windows, and will it be just as powerful ?? what other options would u recommend ??

Yes, it is almost as powerful as Office 2003. By the way, OpenOffice is available on windows and linux. If you start doing some really advanced stuff, you will find differences between the products. However, for 99% of things people use it for, openoffice is just fine.

Be careful with that statement- I tried switching a friend to linux, and she was driven NUTS by a weird margin in OpenOffice. In Powerpoint, you could print out a handout with 6 slides per page, and all the slides would be perfectly centered. But in OpenOffice, for no apparent reason, all the slides were shifted over about .5", and she made me switch her back to windows just for that =p

This is a distinct possiblity, since OpenOffice/Staroffice != Office2003. This is especially true when working with presentations. I've had the problem where importing an office ppt into OO/SO moves all the graphics by a certain amount. The point is, use the help feature and buy the manual if you want to learn how to do things that are coming out different in OO. Were all the slides shifted over to the right by .5"? If so, it's probably because it was set for left-binding format, leaving .5" for holes/binding.

If you're a student you'll probably be giving presentations to others, sharing docs, etc. If so you don't want to use OO.org. Too many weird file incompatibility problems when trying to open/save documents in Office format. The last thing you want to do is make a presentation in OO.org, open it in Powerpoint in class and have everything be off by .5" on the screen (as evidenced in the problem posted above).

As a student you should qualify for academic pricing of Office which is actually very reasonable (~$100 i think). I don't know if 2003 works with WINE or Crossover Office however...you might want to get an older version.

I kind of agree with simscitizen. The problem would be easily solved if you have access to a computer lab at your university. Do it in OO at home, take it to the lab, open it up in MSPPT, make sure it's okay, and you're good to go.

If not, buying it at an academic price is always an option.
