recently I received an e mail from nigeria, asking me to work there. the guy gave me the website adress. so far, no problem.

after I said yes to work for them, I receive another e mail asking me to send by wester union 500$ for the job... ah ah ah!!!!

then name on the e mail doesnt match the website adress. no common phone number.
the guy told me I could call if I wanted some reference. he gave me a number??? it was not a company # for who I was supposing to work for....

I learned the guy sent the same e mails to many other guys...

Wow...so much banter on this subject. Who knew that us tech heads could also be so versed on such topics as Ethics, Philosophy, Economics and Sociology.

It does present some interesting thoughts though.

Many of us, having experience with the internet and such, are cautious and tred lightly through it. Look at the nature of these boards. We come back looking for more information, attempt to solve problems, help others. By our very own nature, we seek out resources that will answer our questions in the best and most reliable way. And as a result, we have come to formulate a thought process, and a belief system. That being, the naive and ignorant become prey, while the informed and knowlegable seek truth.

With this said, the general trend on these conversations are that this is a scam...why? because this is what we have seen, this is what is done, and it fits the pattern. I can understand the desires to be optimistic, I can also understand the pesimistic side...I consider myself a realist.

Great discussion on this topic though. I wish the world could go back to the times when we could trust what we are told and believe that everyone is good...but oh well...we don't live in that world anymore do we?

My 2 cents...Look at life with eyes wide open and treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

Great post,

Thats actually why I admire ebay so much. Sure there are scams, but its tremendously successfull. It works on the principal, pretty much that people are honest. With no honesty it would not work at all.

Heres to living in on a planet where people are good to each other.

Confirmation of the Scam

Just recieved an email from another bidder on the auction--

I am the bidder you outbid on the Sager laptop. I was contacted by the seller that you withdrew your bid and I am now the winner. Something doesn't sound right. Did you find something out about this seller?

So i guess this sadly confirms everyone's suspicions that this was truly a simple scam. In my reply to the other bidder, I told him how we've been following the auction and sent him a link to the forum.

I was never really that confident in having the auction actually work out, but at least there has been some great discussion brought out by it!

Thanks to johnhamler for alerting us all about the link...and yes, while the seller is a con-man, my faith in smart consumers and humanity in general was saved by the fact that so far unsolicted emails from people warning me about the auction or trying to figure out what is going on with the auction outweigh correspondance from the seller 5-1.

Have you tried a traceroute of his email? (never know, maybe he never anonymized it)

Man that sux...it sounds as though your hopes were prpraired for the worst.

What's the guy's eBay ID? We should all mess with him.

all in all, ebay has been pretty good to me...
i sold my sager 5660 back in april...had a few bidders, had good communication, accepted payment via paypal, and was very open and honest....
there are some good sellers out there....
since i think i'm one of them..here's some things to look for when you want to buy something...(especially something fairly expensive...my 5660 sold for 1000, so obviously i gained this guy's trust...)

first off....i didnt go for anything fancy in my auction...no borders, no fancy html text....i just gave the straight up facts on the machine, ..i didn't cut and paste anything from any official websites.....
second, i didnt use any official pictures...i took pics of the actual laptop, sitting on my desk at home, and put them in the auction (about 5...)
i was very quick to respond to emails, and made it obvious that i had nothing to hide....i even offered my phone number to the guy if he needed it if he had last minute questions....
if i was the buyer...i would expect nothing less than what i mentioned....

that being said, this other guy sounds like a scumbag, maybe we should email him, and let him know that WE are interested in BUYING the laptop...

SPAM a SCAM, that might come close to being ethical; and if not, it would be still be fun.

There's actually a website where someone did scam a scammer over in Europe over a Powerbook. It's a hilarious read. Check it out here:

OMGWTFBBQ!!!

I visited the site, FriedToast, and I must admit I'm IMPRESSED with the incredible way they took on the challenge, it's almost unbeliable, but I know it happened. I just can't express they way I felt when everything was over and the scammer was at least scammed BIG TIME, kudos to everyone who worked in that mission, especially to the the agents in London, I just want to watch those videos, but they are offline

Makes me real happy to know that we can counter attack those jacka**

Ahh, yes! That's the little story I mentioned two pages back that I had read before. Absolutely hilarious! Those poor scammers being scammed themselves. That was most definitely a good one.

That's the funniest thing I've ever read in my life!

I almost got scammed on eBay when I was selling one of my old laptops. Luckily I figuerd out that it was a scam. Then I dicked with them for over a month. It was the Indosesian stolen credit card scam but some of the same characteristics as the P-P-P-Powerbook story...ship right way FedEx, persistent emails on status, label it for less value then it's worth.

I kept telling them that their card was denied. The very next day they gave me 3 more numbers to try. This went on for a few weeks. I was going to try to get one of those "PROPS" laptops like you see in new model homes as a display prop. Then I was going to sent him a picture of a laptop with my middle finger in the photo. The classic one was a dirty diaper from our kids diaper pale! But I don't think I could have got that one past the post office.

In the end, we just told them that we reproted them to Interpol and FBI and to 'F' off.

Just have to ask...

Hey Pyro, I just gotta ask, man... Does your town look like the label drawing on a bottle of Newcastle? You know with the bridge and all...? That is the world's BEST beer and I was weaned on it but I'm kind of a Nevada redneck and I have never been to England (yet). But I've always wondered if that little drawing on the bottleneck reflected a true Newcastle scene or if it was just marketing BS.
Yeah, it does actually. The bridge on the bottle is the Tyne Bridge - one of the biggest/oldest landmarks of the city. The river it crosses divides two cities, Newcastle and Gateshead. Newer landmarks you may have heard of are the Millenium Bridge and the Angel of the North.
