Hey, I need help from anyone who has experience with linux on our A51's. I want to duel boot, but I would like to hear from someone who is currently doing this. I dont know which linux operating system I should download. Is there one that installs easy on the A51? My specs are on here, the only other thing I would like it to be compatible with is my Linksys 802.11g wireless card and router.

If you are not too familiar with Linux I suggest RedHat, almost every HOWTO is written in terms of RedHat.

dont use redhat.... it has security holes so big a truck could drive through it

use either SuSe or mandrake

I just tried the eval of suse 9.2
I could not get a wireless internet connection with my linksys card. Dont know if it is just me or if there is a compatibility issue.
Everything else seemed to work ok, it looks like a nice lookin distribution.

Ok couple of things....

One in as far as general Linux quesitons try the linux and laptop folder farther down, youll find a fair amount of people with good knowledge on the topic

2, go Suse all the way in my opinion. Though dont use their live eval CD or whatever, try o get your hands on the Suse Pro version, that will be your best bet.

3. Your Wireless card, there are several sites that I dont have right on hand to give you that will tell you if there is a driver out for them or not, Do a serach and see what you can find out in that regard, knowing linksys it is most likely your wireless card is not supported under linux.

There is one other option though and that is to try the linuxant driverloader, but it costs money and may not work, but it tries to install the windows drivers and run those under linux, and does a decent job with it, so try out their evaluation license first and make sure your card works first, then decide.

Try to find the open source version of the driver first though, itll save ya money and that is the whole point of going to linux right Other than security, stability, ......

Yea anyways, post back any other questions.

If you are just interested in trying out linux, why not a bootable CD like Morphix or Knoppix? This would let you evaluate linux while at the same time not affecting your current install.
