7405/6805 and power inverters question

Here in about a month, I will be moving to Houston, which equals one long ride of sitting in the car. Has anyone used their Gateway 7405 (or eMachines 6805) with a cigarette lighter power inverter? I saw some that go up to 400 watts, which we hope would be enough to run my new laptop and a small portable DVD player.

Anyone have experience doing this?

I have used mine with a cheapo wal-mart 150w (maybe 120w ... don't recall). It works great. Of course I am powering solely the notebook. You may need one a little bigger if you are also wanting to power a DVD player with it.

Thanks. If 120-150w is enough to run the laptop, then we should have no problem.

A good rule of thumb for an inverter is size it at about 120 to 150% of your needed load. Less than that, the inverter can't handle it, more than that and you're wasting battery power due to the inveter 'idling'.
