Hello,

I installed Redhat's Fedoa core and recently Mandrake 10.1 on my laptop. The Fedora core v. couldn't be updated usinog the update manager - after a while it just hang. The mandrake version doesn't suport my graphics card (choosing the card then clicking "Test" gave me a divided screen and scrambled graphics). Before dloading another distro I want to know:what distro supports my hardware best? Here is some more info:

Compal c56 notebook
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
TOSHIBA DVD SD-R6372
Samsung MP0603H 60GB hdd
RealTek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

I run Linux on VMWare v 4.5.1

Any tips on waht distro supports these features?
Thanks!

for the ati you need to compile the fglrx driver yourself and GOOD LUCK doing it
ATI sucks in linux but it works.

I say dont mess with mandrake suse fedora or any of the,. Go Debian Unstable.
download and burn www.kanotix.com.
Then using Mr Kano's magic scripts you cans et up your ati in less than 5min

www.kanotix.com/files

YOu will need to first download the file kernel-vanilla sources then the ati driver.
ctrl+alt+f1 then log in as root.
cd /home bla bla
sh namescript.sh----------kernel
sh namescript-----------ati

then ur done

but these scripts only work with kanotix.

Distro for compal c56

OK, I dloaded Knoppix, burned a cd and it booted perfect. Little support on the website so - is this Debian? Is Knoppix a shell that makes Debian run from cd?

Looks cool. Think I overwrite Mandrake with Debian..

thanks!

Knoppix is actually a full distro that is based on the Debian idea. It contains a lot of features Debian didn't/doesn't. However, like you said, you can perform a vanilla Debian installation off of the Knoppix CD. So, the idea is right, boot up with Knoppix, see if all is OK, install it on your HDD.

EDIT: If you need instructions:
http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html
http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14310 (recommends Kanotix for HDD install. Never used it personally, but looks like a debian/unstable based distro.)

http://www.ngogeeks.com/node/view/74
http://librenix.com/?inode=3250 / http://www.bytebot.net/geekdocs/debian-knoppix.html

EDIT2: If you want actual community support, one of the best ways is to jump onto IRC. The server you can use it 'irc.debian.org'. Join channel #knoppix. If you have a question that is more debian related, join channel #debian on the same server.

Regards,

zakaluka2.
