Everquest 2 Hardlocking Laptop

Picked up Everquest on Friday, played it for a few hours. Played it on saturday for maybe 6 hours. Went to play it today and it's hardlocking my 9100. I get in, move around for a bit, everything freezes. After playing with it all day I figuired cover all the bases, so I formatted and did a fresh install. Same problem. It's somewhat random, I can be in for 10 minutes without a problem, or it locks after only 2. Heat related maybe?

Anyone running this flawlessly? I've got the 3.2ghz with 1 gig of ram and the 9700 128. I tried both the most recent dell Drivers and the Omegas, surprisingly the Omegas causes all kind's of trouble. Pulling up internet explorer, the screen refreshed slow (IE window would come up at the top and slowly load going down the screen) and scrolling in windows was choppy.

I wouldn't say I'm running it flawlessly but it definately runs pretty good for the most part on my 9100. The 512MB is killing me though. Cities are pretty much a slideshow considering I don't want to turn the settings down (which are set at High). At any rate I've managed to get my gnome bard to level 14 on one of the laggiest servers, Antonia Bayle.

how long has eq2 been out? what is the subscription price? I want to get it, but my "high speed" cable internet sucks so bad. i barely get 500 kilobits. It really wouldnt be playable with such a slow connection, right?

runs smooth on my 9100

I've been debating picking it up, but I wonder how well it'll run on my xps with the 9700 (won't be upgrading to the 9800 till jan/feb).

Anybody with the 9700 video card having a good experience???

I have been having overheating issues with my 9100 and EQ2 also. I wasn't when I was playing beta, but now I guess because I am playing for longer periods at a time it is really heating up. I have the graphics settings a little bit higher than when I was in beta so that might be causing it to run hotter too. I am set at 1280x1050 resolution at customized balanced settings, with flora and water effects on.

I am running it with a 3Ghz processor, 1GB RAM, 9700 128MB graphics. I read on another post that a guy got an Evercool cooling system and it fixed it. Not sure how noisey that is but I think I might do the same.

(The other night I was running through the Commonlands when my computer froze up and my character kept on running and ran into a huge group of red orcs. Needless to say my character died and then died again trying to recover the spirit shard. Don't really want that to happen again to overheating.)

1024x768 + Balanced ran fine with my 9700 during beta.

Ran Everquest II for about 6 hours straight Friday-Saturday with no problems here.

Playing it for about 5/6 hours and it will lock up once or twice, a little reboot and its fine tho. Performance is great, i got a 3.4 1gb ram and the 9700 128. running it at 1900x1200 smooth! And i've got the 9800 in the post!

stash 500kbps is high speed. 50kbps is dial up, so 500 is 10 times that. Do you really think there's that much data on being sent back and forth? The only information in your connection is location numbers for everything you should be able to see. Low latency doesn't make much difference in a game like EQ2. sure, there's a split second delay in noticing something is coming at you, but the whole design of this type of game is to work around lag issues.

And it's not lag, it's just a consistant latency. this isn't an FPS, and having a low ping doesn't give any advantages over a medium or high ping. All are equally playable, and it's extremely doubtful you'll notice anything. Heck, there was a point when I played EQ, that I was using connection sharing with dialup and the wife and I would play EQ together, over a single dialup, no lag at all.

The game won't be unplayable because you don't have a 5000000kbps connection it's not live, real time combat, it's round based combat, so that issues with lag have a very minimal impact. if you wanna play it , don't wait, it's not going to matter, except for the downloading of the patches

well, that may be, but i havent been able to play cs since i moved into this place, and i cant play farcry either, since i dont get comcast...i want comcast! i used to have a 2.5 megabit or higher connection. the latency here uber blows. so its round based combat you say? are you talking like, using a combat queue, like SWG? i dont see how the world could continuously pause for other people to have their actions, but i think im just not understanding here. can you explain it? i was thinking about going to buy it today, but i need to understand what youre talking about first. i never played the original eq, so i dont know how similar it is to that.

All MMORPG's are round based. They all take their rule sets from D&D.

But that is not to say they are round based from a button smashing perspective. Combat in a MMORPG is based on timers. The server controls everything, the only thing you do is let the server know you would like it to put a special move into your queue. You'll notice in EQ2 you can queue up 4 or 5 attacks ahead, which eliminates worry about a little lag, since you tell the server ahead of time what you are wanting it to do for you.

You see, every creature, player, etc., has a fighting skill, which determines how many attacks they can perform per second of combat, whether weapon or spell based. Then item characteristics add or subtract from this base attack timer. So, once combat is started, your reflexes play no part at all in combat, unless you are doing some sort of chained attack that requires you to hit button X after a certain event, say a Block, to iniate a special attack skill. But even then, it's not so much reflexes, but hit the button before another timer runs out.

The whole point of MMORPG's was the provide a gaming experience devoid of uber players based purely on their own faster reflexes, but based on thoughtful planning of combat. Which spell, which attack frist, second, third etc. Will I pull agro off the tank if i attack too quickly, yada yada yada.

About the only connection type that would actually perform poorly (suspicion only), would be satellite, since there is so much lag up and down from the birds. anything you do via satellite is at least a half a second lagged just due to the sat delay, before taking into account the internet itself.

get the game and have fun, or wait a week and get WoW, which is also very fun, and probably a little less hardcore

hmm, thanks for the perspective. definitely something to think about. now i just need to get my credit card back under control so i can pay for game time....lolz

well, if you happen to live in Va, I might be able to help ya, but chances of you living in Va are probably slim I am in a financial needs analysis business, helps families get out of debt faster, save more for retirement and college, etc. Teaches how to reduce dependency on plastic, that sort of thing. The plan doesn't matter where a person lives, but the loan portions, if you can take advantage of those portions of the system, require licensing, and I'm limited to Va, MD, Wash DC, and maybe WVa. Something about bordering states as long as you live within a certain distance.

But hey, it's Christmas right, just ask someone to get it for you for a Christmas gift, and see if you can wiggle it out of them early, and just put the box under the tree haha

Came out last Tuesday as far as I know, monthly rate is $14.99 (doesn't say it on the box anywhere). If it's playable over dialup as many suggest, broadband will work fine.
