4760

Surprisingly, no one has posted pics of their 4760 yet, and I guess the internet abhors a vacuum.

So here are some pics of my notebook... I got someone to also take a few with me in them, as a way to give a sense of the size and ergonomics of the machine.

I also should mention, that the 6-in-1 card reader really kicks ass. I borrowed a Canon PowerShot G2 equipped with a 1 GB MicroDrive to take the pictures, and when I was done, I just inserted the MicroDrive card into my notebook and it showed up in My Computer like a hard drive. No "detected new hardware", no driver installation, I just copied the files off and deleted them from the card, and pulled the card out when I was done. How cool is that?? OK, Microsoft gets some points.

Here is the notebook side by side with my Kyocera 7135.

The sticker on the lid is the porcupine from the Free State Project.

It's a little unwieldy, not as light as my 15" Powerbook, but the screen is a lot nicer. (its default lower gamma makes the Powerbook look washed out, and you can't argue with that much additional real estate.) I'd like to do a side-by-side with my Powerbook and NEC 18" flat screen monitor to test viewing angles, but I only thought of it after the camera had been reclaimed by its owners. Maybe later.

Yes, that is a snowflake on my shirt, and yes, I am in Florida. Deal with it.

Great pictures! It looks really thin when it's next to the phone. Or maybe thats just because my laptop is 2 1/4 inches thick.

wow

wow I'm impressed. Now all we need to know how it fairs with games. Looks great though, like a supped up G4 Mac, yeah I totally agree that the G4 looks washed out. I argue with my bosses who all have G4's that my Sager 5660 has a way better screen, but Mac users will be mac users.

I'll be super impressed when they put a 128 meg vid card in this sucker.

Thanks for posting your pics. I've just purchased a 4760 online last night and I'm getting exicted about receiving it. Seeing these pictures makes be feel comfortable about the purchase I've made. Looks like a solid machine. I've read alot of negative articles about the 1440x900 resolution. Is the resolution sufficient in your opinion?
I like the blue porcupine sticker the best heh

two questions:

1) does the relatively low resolution bother you?

2) do you have any sisters?

I've been reading this awesome forum for a couple of weeks, and my first post is regarding the Free State Project. I'm such a politician.

Have you signed up to move? How did you hear about the project? I love reading Walter E. Williams' columns and saw it there.

I'm helping a friend who's going off to college select his laptop. His parents suggested Dell, but that's just because "they've heard t'ings" about buying from folks they haven't heard of.

Back when I was going off to college, I did a LOT of research to try to find a laptop and found www.sagernotebook.com. I was extremely impressed with the price and power. I ended up getting a desktop but now it's 3 years old and I'm starting to consider the 4760 (so is my friend). We agree it's very sexy.

Anyhow, I found the forums when looking for more info, and I was happily surprised to find that Sager had resellers because it's cheaper.

Wow! What a fortuitous post. My friend just called from vacation and said his parents agreed to go ahead with the sager! I was literally searching Walter Williams' archived columns while composing this post, and he called me up with his credit card number!

Anyways, great looking lappy Ratha! I might get a FSP sticker for my friend. And if I like his, I may buy one myself!

Thanks PCTorque and Sager!

hey your the first person i've seen with both a sager and a powerbook. So my first question is which do you like better? I know they are meant to do different thing (sager: games, apple: not games) but for everyday use, what do you prefer. I've narrowed my choices down to a 5680 or a 15" Al powerbook (if it ever comes out). I think they will release at the same time. If i dont get the sager i miss out on the gaming power but i do have a ps2...but i really like pc games too. The widescreen on the powerbook is also really nice. thnx for any input.

Thanks for the link! those are interesting articles. Right off the bat I agree with his most recent one about insider trading. I'll put that site on my list. What other sorts of stuff do you read? Always nice to meet people interested in sane politics!

I'm not signed up to move, but I'm *this* close to going for it. The deadline to join before the vote closes to new members is August 15, and it seems like it would be cool to participate in the vote if you're going to do it at all.

How synchronicitous...

A sticker for yourself? Don't go too crazy!

Seriously, I'm glad you're both considering Sagers. The 4760 is a fabulous machine and so far I am just in love with it.

Cheers!

It's sort of like comparing apples to oranges. The PowerBook is cute, but the OS awkward in a lot of ways. Like the fact that there are still resource forks, and if you try to go into the command prompt and 'mv' a native Mac file, you destroy it because you didn't move the resource fork - you have to use a special move command. I really see the mac mostly as a power toy. A very functional power toy, since it's been my main development machine for almost five months, but after almost six years away from macs (in college I was quite the devoted user) I now just can't get used to the metaphors again, and the capability that my PowerMac has (1 GHz, vs. the 3 GHz chip in my 4760; 4200 rpm hd, vs. 5400 in the Sager) when I spent almost the same amount on each machine, is kind of shocking.

No one can make up your mind for you... it seems to me that it still comes down to what your main tasks are: if you have to exchange desktop publishing files with graphic design coworkers then you need to get a mac, if you have to work with excel documents on a windows share you need a PC, and if you are a developer, then you probably crave unix.

Good luck...

i need that 17" lid for no other reason than my sticker fetish

strange though, that the 128mb version of the ati card is not offered for a machine that clearly has the mass for it.

I'm a republican with strong libertarian leanings. So, I consistently read Mona Charen, Ann Coulter, Larry Elder, John Leo, Michelle Malkin, Thomas Sowell, Mark Steyn, George Will, and, of course, Walter Williams. A little over 3 years ago, I was introduced to Walter Williams' articles by a civics teacher. I searched the web for more of his articles and the first site that popped up (back then) was Jewish World Review. I'm not jewish, but I like the convenience of having all those columnists listed above in one place. If you like Walter, you'll like Thomas Sowell (also an economist).

I haven't gotten around to it, but I wanna read some of Ayn Rand's stuff.

I concur.

I have plans of going to grad school in Virginia and trying to get into Washington's political scene. Thus, I don't think I could keep the promise to move. If you did, PCTorque might have to rerelocate, since Florida isn't up for grabs.

After reading my post last night, I realized that the object of "his" wasn't as clear as I wanted it to be. His laptop or his sticker? But since the statement is true in either case, I decided to leave it (i.e. If I like his sticker, I might buy myself one. And, if I like his laptop, I might buy myself one.) I must have a lot of disposable income to be making equivalent statments about stickers and sagers.

It never would have occurred to me that the resolution is less than good. It's larger than the 1280x1024 that I'm used to, so to me it is very ample. OTOH, 1600x1200 is just too dense for me. I'm nearsighted, and even with glasses/contacts I find myself squinting at a 1600x1200 laptop screen.

Nice! I like your unamerican activities selections. I believe the 128mb version is coming out in the fall? do I have that right? ... October, I thought.

I love Thomas Sowell. Haven't read much of the others though... Do you ever read Andrew Sullivan? Ayn Rand is cool IMO. Almost as cool (in terms of quirky ideological historical figures) as Aleister Crowley. I recommend Anthem (for a taste of her fiction) and The Virtue of Selfishness (for a taste of her philosophy) - both are short. And beware of Objectivists.

Well, the time frame is generous - the move doesn't start until after the project has 20,000 members, and they are only approaching 5,000 now (after 3 years, though the signup rate is accelerating.) After the 20,000 mark is reached, the original signers have 5 years to complete the move. Also, the work I do for PC Torque could be done long-distance, though perhaps not quite so efficiently. I'm their webmaster and software maintainer, and I could probably also take calls from a distance too since all the email/database stores are online.

(Er, is it just me, or is this thread devolving into off-topic? )

I'll check out Mr. Sullivan. In 7th grade, my dad made me read Anthem. I liked it alright, but I didn't give it much thought. Maybe I'll take it up again.

Heh. That always happens when I post.

In an effort to make amends, I'll ask a question about the 4760 my friend just bought. He got the 2.8 Ghz CPU instead of the 3.06. The reason was it's cheaper and we figured he wouldn't take advantage of HT too much. My question is "Has HT made a noticable difference in your usage? If so, what sort of applications are you running to have need of it?"

Thanks!

In an effort to help you bring this thread back on topic:

YES, HT does help some apps; other apps it doesn't do squat for.

HOWEVER (yes, that's a big "however") even if the app takes no advantage of HT, the OS does, so it can handle it's OS duties more efficiently while the non-HT app is running, so you still get a little HT benefit.

The biggest benefit I noticed is encoding an MPEG-2 movie (from a DV-capture) before/while making a DVD. Typically, the rendering takes 2x-10x the time of the actual video (so a 30 min. video can take 1h - 5h to render); on my 8887 with HT enabled, it happens very close to 1x (real time) which ain't bad for software encoding.

Milage may vary, of course.

I've been meaning to read some ayn rand ever since i saw Tyr (on andromeda) reading her. She plays some part in Neitzchean philosophy (the SciFi race, not the guy) - given that the Neitzcheans (sp - sorry) were genetically engineered at Ayn Rand Station on a planet named fountain head.

Oh, wierd. What show is that? "andromeda"? (I don't watch much TV but I used to watch sci-fi when I did)

If your sig isn't facetious and you really are a socialist, you might find yourself turned off by her philosophy. She is violently opposed to collectivism of any sort. Kind of her defining feature, you might say.
Gene Rodenberry's Andromeda (the full title) stars kevin sorbo as what pretty much amounts to "Hercules in space". However, other characters and many of the story lines are good (not that it is that close to gene's vague idea of a star trek prequel - but then never is th ereal star trek prequel). They play at 6:00 pm saturday on my local WB, but they're running the most recent (and worst imho) season at the moment.

You might enjoy the first season if you can find the DVD's at you local rental place.

My Socialism is weird - and doesn't match the typical american definition. I'm also far far to the right on many things to the socialist party i (lapsedly) belong to in australia - and they're drifting to some sort of weird place themselves...

Not that Ratha's pics weren't nice, and not that the pics in the news section weren't nice as well, but sagernotebook.com has finally put up their neat X-Y-Z axis shots that I love.

4760 from all angles (well, 7 angles)

My neighbor's 4760 should be here on Tuesday. I may see if I can skip work. That way, I can look at it from ALL angles for real.

Arg...seeing all these pictures of the 4760 is KILLING me.... I am a patient human being, I know it....but this waiting for my lappy is hard as heck.
