dvd viewing software

What would you guys recommend I get for viewing dvd's on my laptop? Is the very basic player it comes with good? What makes dvd viewing software different?

If any stand apart from the rest, let me know, I'd like to give it a look.

Thanks

I've changed over to PowerDVD 5 because it appears to be more stable. I used to use InterActual. The difference between the two? I swore by InterActual before because it had a very simple interface. Very clear what the buttons did. At times, however, I would try to rewind and it would crash on me.

There are a few threads on this already... if you don't get a good response, try a search. You'll get a buncha information.

The PowerDVD version you got with your Dell is good enough, at least if you are not very demanding.

Anyway, I'd try the PowerDVD 5. There are a few interesting improvements, like the "Intelligent resizing" of the image (really useful for widescreen laptops). The contras: when playing in battery mode, it consumes a lot of resources...

Just take a look and choose...

Another vote for PowerDVD 5.

I also agree that PowerDVD 5x is an excellent software solution. Here's an excellent review:

I personally use Dell Media Experience, but that's because I have the remote to use with it. I just wish there was a way to turn off that stupid "Chapter XX" that appears in the corner every no and then.

On a similar subject, I am looking for good free DVD burning software. Any recommendations?

I just found out that I have powerDVD 4. Too bad you can't upgrade for free.

After I did clean reinstall I realized dell never sent me the powerDVD disc to reinstall, so I had to use my desktop version which is version 4. No biggie I guess.

any of you 8600 users having sound problems with dvd movies? i've adjusted everything that i could have, but the volume doesn't go very high... but winamp, realplayer, etc all play files at higher volumes though.

i've tried playing dvds both on POWERDVD and interactual

Disable spdif output in the advanced setting of your volume control. (IE right click the volume icon in your taskbar.) That will increase the volume tremendously.

thanks, i already tried that.. doesn't work. the windows sounds are pretty loud (mp3s too), but when i watch movies directly from a dvd or cd the sound is very weak. im thinking it's possibly (i dont know the name of it) that one wire that connects from the soundcard to the cd/dvd drive that is the problem...

Try searching on this. I believe the issue was posted before.

[Edit: I didn't find a solution to the problem, but there is a therad on this.]

^^^

I believe you mean the CD-audio cable however in a notebook there is no CD-audio cable, that connection is made by copper traces on the mainboard and I highly doubt they are damaged/missing.

Is the volume of your software DVD player turned up all the way? Also check your software's speaker settings. If it is in 5.1 mode then I could understand why it would sound really quite on laptop speakers (no center channel).

What dvd software are you using? I know that the sound is low in powerdvd if the speaker settings in powerdvd are set to domething other than stereo though mine is set to dolby surround downmix. Anything else and my volume is not quite as loud. I've got an inspiron 8600 BTW.

WinDVD I have less hassle with DVDRs when using that program vs PowerDVD (ie language channel issues)

I have both WinDVD6 and PowerDVD6. I recommend PowerDVD6 Deluxe. Volume works fine on my 8600.
