Hi, first time replying to thread. Listen, I had a Sony VAIO S270 2.0 Centrino, 1GB RAM, Best Graphics card, etc., and I sent it back because it was TOO Freakn' Loud! I work with audio (music, recording) and let me tell you, the fan on the S series VAIOs are way too loud. It's as though they did not develope their cooling system enough to deal with the fast 2.0 chip or something, the fan sounds like a leaf blower, even at it's lowest speed (It has speeds 1-5) I am going to try a Dell because I've tested one and it is very quiet, very important to me. I couldn't even use the laptop at school in the quiet section of our library because the laptop was just so loud.
Other than that.... other things I didn't like about the Sony, and this is my 2nd Sony I owned:
1. Memory sticks suck and much prefer the SD cards which the 700m has a build in (and fast) reader for
2. The Sony IS diffinitely better looking, no doubt, than the 700m, however there is something really annoying in its design: The thing that comes out for the PCMCIA card slot actually extends a little past the edge of the laptop. The problem is that when I stored the Sony in my bag and took it out later, maybe 50% of the time that little thing had been pushed in and extended out. It happened very often and was just begging to be snapped off by accident, especially since I use my laptop every day and on the road.
3. The battery is pretty good, maybe 4 hours max, but in order to get that max life, you have to turn off the cd rom drive all together.
4. In case anyone reading this cares: the sound output (headphones) is not as loud as the 700m. My opinion, of course, but I am an audio engineering student and have well trained ears.
Um.... what else. The Dell is way cheaper. As of today, Dell sells the 700m with 2.0, 60 HD (which is 7200) and 8X DVD RW for $1665. I will buy 2 gigs of RAM from internet for around $600. Extra 8 cell batery on Ebay for $89
Oh, the screen on the Sony looks nicer. And the video is of course better/faster. But since I only really care about speed and Sound, not graphics, the 700m is a better machine, in my opinion
