get Dothan now or wait for new models and/or possibly Alviso???

craptacular...I was all set to order my new notebook then Asus, Intel and AMD all pooped on my head!... ...anywho, I was going to get the M6BNe but have now decided to wait to see what comes out between now and February...I really like the Dothan for it's mobile features (battery life, heat, etc...) and it does compare favorably peformance wise to P4's and AMD64's...what's driving me bonkers is that Asus is coming out with 2 or 3 new U.S. models. One's a P4 DTR - http://usa.asus.com/products/noteboo...l_overview.htm - while the other is going to be an AMD64 widescreen. The new AMD64 from Asus intrigues me (it will supposedly have more memory on the video card and a better screen, 2 things I'd give the M6BNe's portability up for) and more rumors about Alviso (Dothan's replacement) are coming out. I'm not pressed for time so I can wait a little bit, it just sucks to do so...here's some linkage...

-Tom's Hardware snippet, I also like the NVIDIA idea of an MXM interface (upgradable notebook video cards)

I'm actually wondering that myself, as I'm pretty much in the same situation.
The only question for me though is, whether the new Centrino replacement will make a huge difference in performance, when combined with a new gpu.
If the only thing that really changes is the FSB and the audio chip, that won't make that much of a difference, but if they find a way to integrate a pci-e into a portable (as in 6 lbs portable) then I'm game.
Could anyone enlighten me?

I checked Intel's site and came up with..
Quote:
Available early next year, Sonoma will deliver Intel's best solution for entertainment on-the-go in notebooks and adheres to the company's Intel® Stable Image Platform Program, designed to help corporations manage their computer software image transitions. Sonoma will include a new Intel® Pentium® M processor with a faster, 533 MHz front-side bus and a chipset code-named "Alviso," along with the newly released Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG network connection.

Sonoma will be followed by the "Napa" platform, which will include a new dual core mobile processor, codenamed "Yonah," based on Intel's 65nm process technology. The platform will also include a new integrated graphics chipset codenamed "Calistoga," and next generation Intel wireless solution codenamed "Golan."
Normally I would not buy an Intel based PC, AMD rocks the desktops yet is far behind on the mobile sector, but in the current situation and my need to buy a good laptop there is no way around it.
So what I'm getting from that is that the upgrade in FSB, high definition audio and different WiFi standard is all.
So I guess I'm grabbing a current Centrino and wait what AMD is going to come up with. Mobile dualcore CPU does sound solid though.

More links, actually it's a different page in the same article from Toms Hardware that I posted earlier, but it goes into a little detail about Napa...

http://www4.tomshardware.com/busines...2004-1-05.html

I'd suggest reading the whole article as there are good tidbits throughout...From what I've learned about Sonoma and Alviso it will promote the same changes that we are currently seeing in desktops to notebooks (i.e. new cpu's, ram, hard drives, pci-e maybe, even screen changes and battery life). Does this mean 3 mobile processors from Intel in less then a year and half total time? (Dothan-Alviso-Yonah) And what will the compatibility be with a 64-bit version of Windows?...

None, as neither Dothan or Yonah will get 64-bit support according to Intel's roadmaps.

Alviso has nothing to do with 64 bit support as it is a chipset.

Dothan doesn't EM64T extensions, but Merom may have. (Merom is far in the future though)
