Why did dell stop making "track stick"?

Thread Starter
I just got a Dell 8600, I really though I could live without the "track stick" and use the touch pad, but the touch pad is really pissing me off.

Can anyne tell me why Dell stop making the 8600 without the track stick.

They wanted to cut costs.

Because people confused the trackstick with a reset button and got mad cuz it wasnt working.

First of all, it is sucks! (Good idea, but look at the results when you are using cheap stuffs)
Second, to cut costs (In original system configuration at support.dell.com, you will see something that will say "Cost Reduced")

If you want a track stick, do the d800 conversion...I am pretty sure those have a stick on the keyboard

i used to miss the track stick after moving from my IBM to my Apple Powerbook, but now that I'm used to the touchpad, I prefer it over the track point. When I use laptops that have both, I now exclusively use the trackpad, and find it more efficient. I think you just have to get used to the trackpad.

I would use an external mouse anyhow...

I think they took it out because of problems with trackstick's buttons.

Not true, it was cost cutting. They cut out at the same time for the i8600c the iRDA, legacy ports and mixed around the vents a bit. Saves them a fair amount (all those i8600's add up, it's a popular model) that can be used to supplement customer discounts, etc.

I was disappointed that they cut the legacy ports and the IrDA, but not really about the trackstick. I have gotten used to the touchpad (from my 5100), and can't use the trackstick anymore.

I'll take the Logitech Optical Trackman (red ball) any day over the track stick, I have had it on 2 Notebooks 8500 and now 8600 works like a charm.)

I personally use a Logitech MX900. Internal bluetooth makes it just the best. No cords, or dongles. And it is so comfortable and very VERY smooth.
