PCMCIA TV TUNER ! Whoooohoooo ! - Page 2

can u play xbox or ps2 on the pc with that card?? like does it run smoothly?

Sorry, I don't have any consoles to try it on. However, I would assume if the console has an S-Video out then it will work, but there may be some lag.

so, if i want to watch cable tv, just buy this card and install it into my laptop and it's good to go? even with integrated graphics card?

and is this tv tuner pcmcia card better than usb tv tuners like the tv wonder?

What Brand?

Sfdoddy, Thanks for the review! Is this the AverTV Cardbus you're using? Also, do you know if it has closed captioning features? My Sager has a built in tuner but it doesn't have closed captioning/subtitles, which sucks the big one. You should be able to find out right away, since the software will have a closed caption button that will either be clickable, or blanked out if it's disabled.

Yes, according to the software it does support closed captioning.

Lifeview.com is now shipping their PCMCIA TV tuner in the US for $84.95 with support for MPEG 1,2,4 capture. I'm waiting for their HDTV version, Hopefully it will be shipping soon.

Sorry, newbie question.

Is PCMCIA faster than USB 2.0 ?
Because IMHO both speed are not much different. CMIIW please
So what's the benefit of the PCMCIA?

Thanks

I don't know if we'd notice much difference in speed between USB 2.0 and PCMCIA, but I personally like the cleaner setup with PCMCIA. There's no separate unit dangling around.

Anybody know if the AverTV offering includes an antenna? The Lifeview unit description includes a portable antenna, which is pretty cool.

BTW, what does CMIIW mean?

Nope, the Aver product has no aerial.

Hmm I see.
But if so , then the one using PCMCIA don't have antenna, isn't it? because it's usually only a card

Do you think you can test without a console. Maybe if you put your computer next to a normal TV and see how much lag the TV show gives on the laptop compared to the TV, it would equal the console lag.

As to the solution to the laptop problem, someone (nintendo, sony, MS) needs to make a firewire adaptor for their console and skip the whole TV tuner process for computers.

There is a slight, almost unnoticeable delay. I can only pick it up with the sound. How this affects gaming I have no idea.

How far does the card stick out of the machine itself?

HD

PS A pic would be cool...
About an inch and a half. I'll try to dig out my camera tomorrow.

So would this be a better bargain than the USB tv tuners?
From what I hear there is no major performance difference between the PC Card AverTv and the USB one. USB 2.0 is about the same speed as PCMCIA. The PC Card one is smaller and doesn't dangle off the back. I use Firewire for digital input, but for analog input the Aver works as well as I need.

That said, there are more USB tuners than PCMCIA. You can get a proper HD USB tuner, and there is space for more ins and outs and doo-hickeys.

But these are still software dependant so you need a gutsy lappy. To really make life easier a card with full hardware MPEG/AVI conversion is the go, like one of the Canopus cards.

So while the Aver card works very well for the money, and very well for my occasional transference of analog video, if you want the ultimate it will cost more and be much less convenient.

Just to twist in the wind again, however, more and more lappies are coming with built-in tuners/video inputs and they will only get better. So i wouldn't spend up too big.

Cheers

Holy snaps, the ATI TV wonder usb2.0 cost around 100 bucks on amazon. If all TV tuners are this much, is it even worth the money to get it than hooking it up on tv?

I got a Hauppauge PVR USB2 from Cicuit City for $99.99 after rebates. I'm gonna use it to digitize tapes and record live video. I consider it worth it, especially because this model includes hardware MPEG encoding. That means about 600 MB per hour for VHS Quality, 4 GB per hour for DVD quality.

I assume that this TV tunner doesn't have an internal TV Tuner, isn't it? Is there any TV Tuner for notebook that comes with an integrated antenna. Thanks

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the Lifeview model has a portable antenna included. I don't know how big or small this "portable" antenna is. If you're wanting an antenna integrated into the shell of the tuner, without anything protruding, I don't know if that's possible.
