Oh shoot, fresh out of reasons to get Half Life 2. Graphics? Nope, nothing that games haven't had for at least a matter of months...gameplay? Meh. We'll see if it has a more compelling single player game than Doom 3. Multiplayer? Counter Strike has been around for years...so has deathmatch. What's so exciting about this game?
98% from PC gamer. 97% from IGN. Widely lauded as the best single-player fps ever.

And you get day of defeat and counter-strike source when you buy it (dod is exclusive to the online version). And it will inevitably have tons of nice mods like Half-Life did.

Ok guys, lets have a quick review from the folks that really matter. I`m gettin` up at the crack of noon to go and get my copy, so how bout some teasers.
My mini review after 2 hours of play (will pay for I have an early morning).

Considerably more compelling game play than Doom3, so far. It is not quite as freaky but still some good suspense and terror. I'd say its less scary and more intense.

Way more interesting story line. The ai is pretty damm smart, being attacked, guys dodging, climbing down ledges to get you being attacked by a helicopter while running on foot is some very crazy s**t. Not to mention having barrrels full of flamming explosives rolled down a hill toward you, also intense.

Verdict (again so far) Totally rocks. I agree with agn it might be the best FPS ever. Very challenging and engaging. Damm I don't think I can owrk tomorrow....$%#% making money I got a game to play.

007 you're a tool. Just got done playing this game for 2 hours & 35 minutes. Wow, it's pretty exciting, physics are incredible, particles are insane, textures are awesome, everything is just crazy good in this game. I run it at 1280x800 everything on high with 4xAA and cap my fps at 60, this game runs as smooth as butter on the MR98 Well I gotta get some sleep so I can wake up and play some more, have fun.

So are the graphics better than Doom3?
Doom 3 probably has better graphics (as in closer to cgi quality). However, on my 4400 i could barely play doom 3 at medium at the lowest resolution, which is pretty crappy.

I can play half life with details at medium at 1024x768 and it looks great on my 4400 with 20-30 fps at least. It looks more like a 3d game and less like a cgi movie but its still a great game with great graphics.

what are the settings you people are using for the 128mb 9700??

my files are still unlocking, and i have to go to work
post #32 of 74
ok, I`ll probably get ripped for this, but here goes......What the hell is up with waiting over 1 year since the original release date, then finally getting the game, only to sit here and wait for 20 min and counting while that POS steam account sets itself up??????? And whats up with this "you must be connected to the internet to play a steam game"???? So they are telling me I have to play with my anti-virus and spyware programs running? What happens when I go on vacation next week for 9 days, are they saying that after PAYING for this game I cant use it while on vacation???? If thats truly the case its going back for a refund, I dont care how good it is.
Stay calm, stay calm, change is hard but you can do it....You only need to be online to activate it. You'll be able to play just fine when your on vacation.
Well its taken 1 hour and it still isn`t unlocked. This is not acceptable for a game I`ve already paid for.
err regardin the inevitable comparo between doom and hl2, i would like to say that doom while having extraordinary graphics, did not exploit the game engine to its max capabilities since most of the game was extremely close quarters and claustrophobic. the lighting i thought was incredible and so were the scares....yikes!!! from what i have seen and read of hl2, i have not played the game yet, its graphics are just as mindblowingly awesome albeit the lighting is not as insane as doom 3. that is the only difference graphics wise....oh and that doom 3 based on opengl whereas hl2 based on directx 9. however hl2 plays very well on machines ranging from the low end to the high end on all sorts of cards regardless of manufacturers. doom 3 brings the ixps to its knees tho in game i get on average of 40 fps.

Well well welll, After taking 98 min to get to the point where it says I can now play the game I paid for, the start program now says I dont have the disk inserted. After all this copy protection crap, they seem to have yet another layer on the disk and I cant play it. Thanks Valve, I`m off to get a refund.
My steam account is hooched ever since I logged in in "offline mode" to check to see if I could play "while on vacation". And now I cannot login and Steam c rashes when I try and reset my password....nice job valve.

I don't think a refund is in order but Valve should definitely invest in some distributed servers that can actually handle the load of a few thousand gamers trying to access thier game at the same time.
Mmmm I wasn't going to rush to buy it... Now I am sure I won't rush it and wait for Valve to iron out details after the commercial launch...

And I still have to finish Far Cry, MOH-PA and SplinterCell-II....
I cant play the game and the steam site is down, no acess to tech support. I hope other game makers and distributors look at this as a complete failure in how to launch a game. I`m voting with my wallet, time for that refund.
Anyone been to any of the HL2 forums? You can barely get on any of them because of all the traffic, and once there you`ll find scores of people that cant play the game, some with the prob I have and some with other problems. This will go down as THE biggest game release gaff in history. All that hype about a game that wont run for many of us.

***EDIT*** Well its now running on my desktop, I guess it doesn`t like Sony dual layer drives in the iXPS.
