What should I expect out of the box?

Ok Im pathetic
I ordered a Sager 2720 w/ 2.4ghz from goroyalpc.com
I got the tracking number for ups, and for the past hour I have been refreshing in hopes that it will be closer to my home. I also ordered Windows XP with the machine. This brings my question as to whether Windows XP will be installed with all drivers or will I have to install Xp and all the drivers. If you look at goroyalpc.com XP is listed with all their machines. I want to know if this just means a copy of XP is included, or if it is actually installed. I regret not ordering from PCTORQUE... as Goroyalpc had some bad reviews. However, I am pretty happy. Ordered Sunday and by Wednesday its already in UPS transit.

It should have XP loaded up with all of the drivers. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Sager would have loaded the programs that it comes with (if any for that model) and possible Service Pack 1 (someone on the forums had that done, I think it was by request, though). Don't worry, you aren't pathetic, I did the same thing :-) Glad to hear you're getting a Sager! Good luck! Welcome!

Wow thanks for a quick reply.
Sager really seems to be all its supposed to be.
What are some of the reliable places to buy Sagers from other then PCTORQUE and goroyalpc? I might have an excuse for work to get a couple more.

I've never heard of goroyalpc, but the major Sager sales companies are:

www.powernotebooks.com
www.sagernotebook.com

People on the forums have all had experiences with their respective reseller. PCTorque is excellent, I hadn't heard of goroyalpc until you mentioned them. Mobileperipherals.com has great prices and I've heard they do a nice job, and of course powernotebooks.com has excellent service from what has been said on the forums. My personal experience is with PCTorque, who has the best prices, and unparalleled service. Other members will undoubtedly respond with their opinions, so I hope it helps! Good luck!

Why have XP loaded? That's extra dinero.

I don't know..I think I'd rather have Windows 2000 Pro over XP Pro any day.
I disagree... Windows XP is a great OS. I used to prefer win2k, but after using winxp, I'd never go back. But, I do agree that it is more money to have it loaded and if you own a copy like me, might as well get it without an OS and do it yourself. Not everyone can or likes to do that though, so it's obviously good to have the option to have it done.

What does XP have that 2k doesnt? They both have advanced security features, both are NT-based, both are just as expensive...

XP reccomends a 256 MB ram (or was it 128...or was THAT minimum?) but 2k Pro only needs...what, 64? XP is more customizable...a lot more confusing (which, I understand, will eventually get used to) and XP has the infamous product reg. key.

I heard about some crappy deals with that product activiation; such as having to buy a whole new copy under some circumstances.

I like the look of XP, but I think its also a bit overrated.

Well, as you said, it's the same price... and with XP you get an integrated burner, an integrated zip utility, so you can just double click on zip files and view them as folders, not to mention run things in them without unzipping... yeah you can do that in 2k but only if you have a separate program for it. XP runs as good as or better than any previous version of windows if you have above 128 megs of ram... as far as the activation, I've activated my windows xp like 5 times already over the phone because I keep reformatting, lol, and they have given me NO trouble. It's just annoying having to have that long number read to you... but you only have to do that if you can't get it done over the internet (which you almost always can if you haven't used the key before). Also, xp has cool fillin features for when you type in file names and it has compatability mode for programs that don't run on NT platforms.... But, 2k is sweet too. I like XP better though.
Hold up...2k doesn't have non-NT compatibility?

I suppose the integrated burner and zip are a few pluses, and I must admit that the horror stories are small in proportion to the number of copies that have been sold.

How much RAM does XP reserve for itself while in use? I think win2k is 32.

Also, XP was supposed to "combine the features of ME with the stability of 2k..." are these features available in the ever-unstable ME version?

I have a question about the video in the 2720. The PCTorque site states the video is ATI Mobility M6-P (Radeon) 32MB DDR. Sagernotebook.com lists the 2720 as having SIS 650 Ultra-AGPII.

Anyone know which is correct?

I got the high end version of the 2720 and Im sure its with the shared memory.
it reserves 64, add to that the apps you install and the number of devices you have (drivers and system recourses), yeah xp more memory usable, but i have used 2k and xp, and really, xp is a beuaty, i woulnt go back to 2k, just to mention something else to the features beebster has mentioned, the driver facilities it offers, and its almost automatic networking (xp network wizard works sometimes, but as i said, you normally dont need to), or the skinning ability (i love that).
And many more features, little but noticeable, like the shellstyles, or others you notice while you use it.

I recommend XP greatly.

Thanks for the reply, chasingdogma. I just checked powernotebooks.com, and it lists the SIS video also.

I've been considering the 5660, but am still unsure about the size and weight. The 2720 is a couple of pounds lighter, an inch or two smaller, and has an XGA screen.

How do you like your's. Still happy with your choice?
In fact, 256 is the optimal, but i have seen 64mb laptops running it, and running mostly on the pagefile, but it was useable!
Yeah, XP may use more memory, but it uses it in a better way.

As far as the graphics on the 2720, I think the SIS stuff is just the integrated graphics motherboard... the M6 from ATI is the actual graphics core though. That may be why both are listed. I could be wrong though :-)

I just got mine today so I cant be a great judge of it. Everything is in order however it is everything I expected and more. It is fast! I will test the battery life and everything tomorrow. The screen brightness is real nice, its pretty quite the HD is almost silent. All in all I like it. My friend has the prostar 5000 series which is exactly like the sager/alienware/visioncomp laptops and his is a little louder and a lot more heavier. If game quality is one of your 3 most important qualities you want then I dont think the 2720 is right for you. But if your looking for an all around good laptop that isnt heavy, and has a fast processor then you might want to look at the 2720 a bit closer.
PCTorque seems to be a good place to buy it at if you want one.
I got mine from goroyalpc.com for 1455$ +shipping. pctorque actually came out a bit cheaper then royal did.
Yeah, the integrated graphics core is not really made for gaming... You'll be able to run old games like Quake, lol, but nothing that is newer... So, if you are looking to game, be cautious. Otherwise, great system :-)
Which Quake, beeb?

Well, you've convinced me. XP it is. Anything is better than my 98 SE, which, strangely, hasn't crashed in a month. That's quite amazing to me. I'd be using 2kPro but it's not compatible with my ethernet card.
