Estimated price for future GPU upgrades

Thread Starter
I know i'm gonna end up buying a 9860 or nething better than that in the near future. The thing that's holdin me back right now is the lack of WUXGA. But one thing that's startin to get me a bit concerned is the price of these future GPU upgrades. I can't deny that I am definately gonna upgrade the GPU on my 9860 sooner or later. But does ne body have any idea on how much these upgrades are gonna cost? I know that there's no official word on it ne where, but I imagine the price to be pretty high. I mean, think about it, most mobile components are so much more expensive than their desktop counterparts. For example, a 16X DVD burner for the desktop is significantly cheaper than a 8X notebook dvd burner. The same is true for hard drives and ram. So it's really got me thinkin now, that a GPU upgrade on the 9860 could cost more than the top of the line desktop video card available at that time. We're lookin easily at $500+ for a GPU upgrade. And thinking along those lines only makes it logical that I wait for a WUXGA screen. After all, if I'm gonna have to pay a shit load of money for an upgrade, its only logical that my screen be fit to play at high resolutions.

I dunno guys. I'm confused. Is my thinkin flawed? Where am I goin wrong if I am? It's makin me reconsider the thought of buying a desktop in general. I know there's no official information available and the best way to find out is to wait and see, but I've been waitin 3 years now. It's too damn frustrating to have to wait a couple of months again. Not that I can't wait, but I'm sure u guys know what I'm talkin about. Can anyone convince me that I'm thinkin too deeply about this and that my logic is flawed? What do u guys think? If anyone has ne info on the price of upgrades, that'd be more than appreciated.

1. I think that you need to "rethink" your requirements/need for a laptop. If you need mobility, then a laptop is what you need.

2. The $500+ range is probably going to be pretty close. Even in desktopsm the high end GPUs are very dear.

3. Nothing wrong with waiting for the WUXGA; however, be aware that there will be a point that you will need to "down throttle" some games in order for them to run. WUXGA is brutal for resources. By waiting for the WUXGA, a side benefit might be that the ATI PCI-E GPU might also be available and give you a bit more performace for you dollars right "out of the chute".

Good luck,

I would guess that Go-Omaha is right. You'll probably need to downsize the resolution for possible games more with the UXGA just to get a little bit better performance. If you really have your heart set on the UXGA, you should wait for it. Based on what I've seen from pictures, it's not real easy to tell the differences between that and the SXGA.

If you don't need the mobility, then a desktop probably is the way to go. You'll be able to upgrade more often and less expensively, but you do lose that ability to go anywhere. It all depends on if the trade-off is worth it to you.

I know this doesn't have anything to do with the thread, but why'd you go back to using Go-Omaha G?

well, tell us your life, I want say tell us how mobile you are.
for what I am concerned (I give you a good exemple)I am visiting my 2 parents and grandparents every week, or monthly.I have to move from house frequently. professionaly, I am a pilot. so i go to hotels, and I travel sometimes to the USA from Europe.

my laptop has the advantage that it doesnt take much place at my parents homes, no place in a bag on the plane, and I can install it in 30 seconds in a hotel room.I ahve a girl friend in the USA, I can easily visit here, and install my PC in her office.

can you do that with a desktop?no!!!
the onlly real bad point of a laptop, it is slighly more expensive but at the end, you have your laptop everywhere you go.it is a fantastic tool for business , e mail, internet, commercila letter, and even for games...

so look if you need mobility or not...,
